Hi Everyone,
I just received an offer to work as an software sales representative (SDR) for IBMs Z systems. I'm coming as a sales engineer in the cloud security space. Can anyone advise me on whether Z systems are something worth going into? Also what do the growth opportunities look like at IBM? Is there opportunity for lateral movement onto other teams? Not too sure how I feel about working on mainframes (Z systems) but they keep pitching hybrid cloud to me. IBM

Think it’s worth noting that a lot of these are tailored towards startups or smaller firms, are interview stage dependent, and seem geared towards management level.
If you come to a large tech firm and ask who our competitors are or what our advantage is, I’m going to assume you haven’t done your homework, and am going to turn the question around you and ask you what your view of the landscape is. Understandable if this is a startup or lesser known firm.
Now that my rant is out of the way, these are good questions for startups. If you’re considering one it would be prudent to know what stage of funding they’re at, who their backers are, what their perception of the landscape is, what the long term plan is post exit if they’re PE/VC backed etc. also with regards to shares, dig in to the value & pool structure. I would also save the vesting questions until negotiations start, we all know you’re going to get equity.
