They are going to offer me a temporary job (CDD, France) where I am an intern now: it's in the cultural field, it is based in Paris and my colleague (same age, with one year more of experience) is earning 2200€ net. My boss told me the salary is going to be a little bit lower since I have less experience: how much "a little bit lower" is in your opinion? How much can I try to negotiate for?

20. 22k is already too low for a year of experience and a junior

uplifting

I miss read. Thought you meant 22k anual. 2.2k net at a junior level is not too bad, considering it is net and considering all the taxes in France that salary is much higher than the 22k pa than I thought

like

Can you negotiate less than 35hrs a week? In Holland, you can negotiate working a half day less for better work balance

Ok thank you very much! I feel for Paris 2k net per month is pretty ok, especially for an entry level job
Anyway, I will see how much they will offer me and try to raise it to 2k if it's lower :)

like

2k per month starting is pretty alright in your field I'd say.

Thank you, I will try to stick to it

Industry annual increase is around 2 to 4%
IT >10%
I don’t know for cultural field.

Honestly, one year of experience should it equate to much of a salary difference. The difference in pay should be based on the tasks and projects that will be completed in the role. If the expectations of your role vs the one more year of experience are the same (I.e. you are expected to contribute at the same level they are, you should have pay equity). I have been a hiring manager and made this decision many times.

In my opinion, the only time a year of experience more can make a difference is it the company has rigid guidelines for individual contributor level (I.e. 2-4 years of experience is L2 but 5 years grants you L3). As such, the pay range changes per level.

The key to negotiating the salary to where you want it is having the conversation on how you bring the same contributions to the team/project, your record as an intern (meeting or exceeding expectations on xxx), and your living circumstances. You can always ask for more than the initial offer with your reasons and wait to hear the response. If it doesn’t align, you then have your decision on whether you would like to stay or pursue other opportunities.

This is more a wider cultural problem. I find with the financial strength France has in the European standing, salaries are far too low and because this is the case across Paris and France, it's sets the precidence to not expect anything above these oddly low numbers.

2.2k net/months is a fairly good salary in the cultural field in france in my opinion.
Even engineer would be OK to start with ~2k net.

Since it is a CDD you will also have the 10% end bonus to count on.
Maybe you can say that if a CDI is given at the end, they would negotiate this bonus as a prime nevertheless ? (It is lost if they keep you and the end of the CDD )

Recently moved into Tech Sales. Frustrated with my Salary (32K base/year, negligible bonus potential of a few K). Was making ~3K/week on average in my previous role which was commission only, no base. Feel like I am completely wasting my time and potential. Saw the cut as necessary evil initially in order to move into tech sales and make multi six figure commissions later on with potential to reach 7 figures in total comp. At least my current role is with enterprise accounts which. Thought?

Hey! I work in tech (4YOE) and I switched to consulting (will be joining in Sep). Background for the question: I have a bonus system with my current employer that consists of 6-12% of my base depending on performance (I always got the maximum 12%).

Question: do you think I can convince my current employer to pay me a prorated bonus since I will be leaving after working 7 months this year? They already told me (informally) that they do not do this. What arguments would you use?

When is the right time to ask for a raise in salary? Nearing the end of my first year at current tech startup. We don’t have a formal process to request a merit or cost of living salary increase that I know of… there’s less then 15 people in our company. I made a big no no when joining the company and did not negotiate the salary before accepting. Should I informally chat about future compensation to my boss? He’s a pretty laid back guy and I think he may be flexible with me.
