Look I put my tray table up -- I don't particularly care one way or another. But what do you think the maximum number of lives saved per year are due to the tray tables being up? Compare that to the amount of time FAs spend policing tray table settings per flight per year. To act like this really has a real life saving impact is ridiculous.

The reason why you have to do that shit during takeoff and landing is that is when issues with the plane happens. Shit doesn't matter at 30,000 feet because you got a long time before you hit the ground. If there is an emergency near the ground, they need you not on a laptop, small bags under chairs, tray tables and seats up.

I can't believe you would do such a thing. You put the whole plane at risk...

Oh, what a rebel you are! All these 'silly' rules have a well-formed decision tree behind - like the speed of evacuation in the case of emergency (reclined seats) or flopping of trays in case of turbulence.

Don't insult the measures taken to protect you. The rules are there for a reason, they use crash simulators and evacuation simulations to show that, yes, those 6 inches do make a difference and, yes, your tray table will take out your spleen and prevent you from being able to brace yourself on impact. Good luck with that. It's idiot moves like this I see every shift as an EMT - people not wearing seatbelts, people with laptops in their laps, or something as simple as someone with a plastic drink bottle between their legs who get hurt most in a car accident. These things cause more work for those of us who are called on to help you when you get in messes like that. Trust me, follow the rule every time to prevent the "one time" you could get very very hurt or hurt someone else. I know OP is trying to be cute / funny, but it's just not.

You probably have to also have your seat reclined. Those 6 inches save lives.

@SA1 -- you have to admit the probability of the tray table being the difference in surviving a plane crash and the probability of surviving a car crash because you wore a seat belt are no where near similar because 1) car crashes just happen way more and 2) the probability of survival is way lower if a plane crash occurs. If anything comparing the two minimizes how important seat belts are in comparison -- which doesn't sound like your point.

Additionally, cramming everyone in coach and reducing legroom has to have hindered everyone's ability to get off. But we as a society seem all right with that cost.

You got lucky this time. I wouldn't try that crazy move again. Was your phone off airplane mode also?

I know that this is off topic, but one time, I swam only 10 minutes after eating a full meal. In retrospect, I realize the utter foolishness of taking this unnecessary risk, and I can't believe that I ever smirked to myself about getting away with it.

Nope. Not possible.
