Things you shouldn’t say when asking for a raise : -I don’t want to live in a walk up any more. -I don’t want room mates. -I asked around and I should be making more. -I don’t cook and only eat out.

Says global COO living in a brownstone with a rooftop

likefunny

I always say "I owe money to some very unsavory people." It gets laughs, and delivers the message.

likefunny

@vpdesign1: built a reputation of being a doer . Never asked or demanded an assistant . Took on finance, recruiting and resourcing responsibilities . Earned raises by showing matrix of money I saved. Took jobs that paid way less that what I was worth and earned my raises but never stayed any where that under paid my worth once I proved it. Called everyone’s BS professionally , keep a sense of humor and always reminded everyone we aren’t saving lives.

like

I knew a jr writer who said "I can't live on this in NY." The HR woman ( who was probably paid less) said "sure you can!" whipped out her pencil and wrote up a budget.

Number three is actually valid. Badly expressed but valid.

Didn’t even know juniors were allowed to breath the same air as a global coo. Who on earth is going to you for their review?

@analyst 1 “says a global CCO , who never said any of these things and lives in a brownstone with a back yard “

I’m half joking, but your title combined with what you’re saying reeks of contradiction given your likely six-figure-plus take home

like

@OP I'm curious, how did you make it to where you are? Was it as easy as hard work and good attitude? What arguments did you make for a raise and did you stay loyal to the company that didn't pay you what you thought you should be making?

like

Yeah, so why are you telling people what not to say

I expect something more enlightening than this from someone of your level...

like

@gcoo that's super useful and inspiring. What would be your top three mistakes to avoid. And how much do you earn these days?

like

Number 3 isn’t usually valid when not only phrased that way, but also when no facts or real information is given. “The internet says so “ argument 😀

Also have to ask... male or female? How many times did you hear something along the lines of “you are amazing and we want to keep you but the timing/budget/etc is tricky right now” (aka you didn’t get the raise) before you jumped?

I get updates on this post, Bitchboy still hasn’t responded. He fled this conversation immediately after being called out. I’d stilll love for him, or her, to follow up, so that I’d be able to scratch this bullshit place off the map. Clearly if this dork is the GCOO everyone internally is one to them, and if they’re not, I’ve got my eye on you asshole.

It’s a “fluid society we live in “

Any tips for asking for more money? I'm not sure which arguments would convince leadership.

Project manager 1, how much are you making and how much are you looking for ?

I feel jerked around by my team, as they keep telling me I will be promoted/have more responsibility, every few months. When I follow up, I am usually told, “but you have more responsibility now; no need to make it official”. Not sure what to believe any longer. They said they have put forward a case for my promotion now. I want to believe them this time but feel like a fool when I think back to some of the earlier conversations. Should I bring those conversations up, or just smile and saythanks
