First thing - You are moving with a paycut adjusted for cost of living
Second - You are stepping down in role hierarchy which you know already but its going to be difficult to adjust to.
Third - Are you really passionate about new skill set you would acquire? If not, this isnt a good deal at all.
I would try negotiating for a better pay and level if I had to consider this offer
Are you In consulting now? It’s either a great way to get into tech, or not the right move because you will be labeled for that low level job for a while. Without knowing your situation, I would say my gut is on the latter. Also your new tc should be around 250 for your age in tech. Otherwise keep looking
Can I ask how you see the $250k breaking down across base etc? I regularly kick myself for not joining a larger consulting firm a couple years ago.
Cost of living adjustment will eat that comp increase for breakfast.
Fair, but is it a better road over the longer term to gain technical experience? I’d like to see my comp increase faster.

I’d love to dive in on “much better at higher level work than I am at execution”. Ideally you should be good at executing to know what can be done high level

Here’s a good cost of living calculator u can use to prove you’re not getting a fair increase

What does your gut say?
That I might hate working in robotics. It might give me the boost I need to get deeper into tech, though….
Nah
Age and family situation?
Yeah, rent is high with increases this last year. I’ll be paying close to $1900 unless I move.

That's really not a pay increase at all if you're moving Midwest to Cali - and if its out of your realm of technical expertise and you're not high on execution it may be a steep climb.
Personally, I'd only consider it if I was passionate about the program.
This was really helpful. I imagine moving into a consumer facing healthtech product, but am also looking to accelerate more quickly given my age. It’s really hard to balance. The autonomous vehicle company does offer a 4% match. I don’t get a match or even dental benefits currently
Nope.. can’t survive with that pay in California
I respect your commitment to your friend, but a burned out boss sounds like another reason not to join this team. In all likelihood, if you join, soon you will be burned out with him. How about helping your friend find another job instead of jumping into the fire with him?
Do any one agree that technical program manager is a stagnation role after some point of time and there is no growth thereafter?
Is it a good role and can a program manager branch out to product management later?
