EY1: Charlotte is too suburban for me. I wanted a more city/urban feel. I visited / looked around but until I moved here I didn't realize what I really wanted.
Added bonus my entire extended family is about 90 minutes away. And, flights from DCA to MCO (for visiting my folks) are much less expensive.
I know two people in Charlotte: my Uber driver and a friend from middle school that I never get to see.
Atlanta is much better than Charlotte.
Charlotte is Atlanta 2.0 - smaller, cleaner, more convenient, smarter residents. All the amenities of a major city without the grime and grind. Growing craft beer, foodie, and start up scenes. Live uptown if you don't want to be "suburban"... OR get an entire house and yard for what you're paying on NYC rent.
Go as fast as you can!
Currently in Charlotte but moving to DC in two weeks. I am in the Southpark neighborhood and just find it too suburban for my tastes.
Pros:
Lots of neighborhoods to choose from
Great amentities
Well thought out urban planning
Lots of trees and green spaces everywhere
Uptown (downtown Charlotte) is the cleanest city center I've ever seen
Huge dining out/foodie culture
Huge craft beer culture
Uber/Lyft is omnipresent
Mild winter compared to NYC
Harris Teeter and Publix grocery stores.
Cons:
Airport arrival inch flights pick up for Uber/Lyft sucks
City of Charlotte is very suburban if you don't live in Uptown
Traffic is bananas.
People do not know how to drive
City shuts down if there is snow (snows 1x per winter ~2-3 inches)
Dunkin can never get my coffee order correct.
I lived there for a few years, I went there because of work and was a bit apprehensive but after moving there I very quickly started loving it! Cost of living is much lower than other metropolitan areas, weather is great (can get a bit humid in the summer, but if NY is your comparison point then it's dry ;) ). It is a bit quieter, so some people find it boring, but given our lifestyles a quiet place to relax in the weekends doesn't sound that bad. Airport is super accessible.
Thanks everyone for responses. Feel like I'm not taking advantage of the NYC lifestyle as much as I used to and think it's time for a change. A little slower wouldn't be so bad!
Not Federal. I'm part of the Cloud practice.
Yes, I asked and no they didn't. I expect there may be some sort of adjustment during my review.
I was in DC and desperately needed to move back south for my sanity, it was either Atlanta or Charlotte for ACN... And no question ATL is the better choice of those two. Would've loved Nashville or Charleston, but with our firm those just weren't options.
Same boat as you OP. But it's my fear of loneliness that's stopping me. With this job it is hard to meet new people. I think if you have a solid fiend circle, you can make any town work.
* arriving flights
OP: if you want to know about neighborhoods, let me know and I'll be happy to tell you about mine and a few others I looked at. Depends on what you are looking for ... Some dentists don't have Friday hours, that's my other huge peeve.
I loved it there
It's a good place definitely. Visit Charlotte over the weekend, take a couple days off and see for yourself if you like it. As said by many before, there are various pros and cons. Just depends what your priorities are currently. Social life will definitely tank compared to NYC. Rent, cost of living will be great though. Think!
Accenture1 - why moving to DC?
oliver1- not living in CLT anymore?
Acc1- best of luck with the move! Hope it goes well. What group do you work for? If you were in federal, dc would be golden!
acc1- did Accenture adjust salary based in increased cost of living? Did you even ask?
If you like the south, Charleston is the way to go.
