I haven’t been but I’d split time between the cities (Bangkok, Changmai) and an islands. Koh Samui or Phuket are high on my list
Would you go on a tour? I travelled there as a backpacker 20 years ago, but organizing it just seems like a lot of work especially if we are on a schedule this time around
Thailand is hoootttt in April. And insanely humid. If that's not your shtick, I'd recommend considering another location or visiting at another time of year.
For a week, you could spend about three days in Bangkok, and then travel to an island destination or up into the mountains near Chiang Mai, depending on what you're into. Would recommend staying away from Phuket and Koh Samui as they'll be particularly packed with tourist at that time of year, given it's Easter.
Bangkok also has wonderful restaurants so if food is your thing you'll have plenty of options!
If I did Thailand again I would just spend all my time between Chiang Mai hiking and the islands
I just got back from Thailand. Do Northern Thailand if I were you. April can get very hot so being up in the North will help. A ton of people I met talked about Pai—a place to think about.
I went to pai but it was just kind of a pain to get to. If you drive in, it’s like 300 turns one way from Chiangmai. We went with a group and one girl puked the entire way. Just a warning if you get car sick.
I would also say 2 days in Bangkok is more than enough unless you are looking for something specific there.
