Thinking about applying for IRS jobs, but confused by their GS level system. If I’m an S2 in tax, do I go for a GS 9 level position that requires my skill set?

You’re probably in the GS12-13 range. No doubt that they are making it enticing. $100K fully remote government job (aka ~40hrs per week)? Sign me up too.

S2 probs won’t get gs12. I know public accounting manager with cpa and 6+ years experience and they were only offered 11 and one negotiated to 12. They’ll probably give you gs9/11 as an S2 which is a pay cut but still worth it if you value easy government

Maybe the competition is fierce in certain IRS offices? I’m seeing some replies saying it’s possible to get GS13 at 4 years experience which isn’t too far away for me.

I was offered a GS13 position and I’m a cpa with 4 years experience

like

Apply for 12-13

The way I see it GS 13 is more in line with experienced senior associate - junior manager. GS14 more in line with experienced manager - senior manager. But I’m no expert. Also, keep in mind neither GS 13 nor GS 14 get to delegate. Both level work solo on projects and report into a field manager.

For what it's worth, if you're willing to move then apply to GS13 in Seattle. They have a tough time hiring there because of competition from Amazon, Microsoft, etc.

GS13. S2 tax too

. GS7 can be straight outa college and GS9 is basically the same responsibilities. You are easily a GS 11-12. GS13 is more manager but could be possible as a reach application.

I agree with this. I started as a GS7 out of college and left after 8 years as a GS13 for a manager position at PwC.

I’ve been interviewing and I’m running out of excuses for being out of the office randomly and without much notice. I switched two years ago from regional real estate/energy to a local small, but established residential real estate practice. I have strong credentials but I’m worried this small firm experience is killing my marketability to large companies.

Genuine question as I wanted to know is it strange for someone to want to switch to advisory from tax. Would it be difficult for someone to transition from that position? I understand that they are too completely different work but similar fields. Also wanted to know what’s the day to day basis like for advisory during covid and in general

So I started at a new role at a known retailer about 2 months ago. I am their first hire in this role, as I have more than 5 years of relevant experience leading initiatives and optimizing process across departments. While I understand it takes time to adjust to the culture, its seems like all I have witnessed is resistance to change. I already feel myself not wanting to be here long, but I'm putting pressure on myself to not be a quitter. Would you stick it out or start looking?
