Thinking about getting a second credit card. Is that good or bad for my credit if I open another one?

100% good. You will have a hard inquiry on your report for a while but as long as you don’t rack those up, the additional credit limit will lower your credit utilization which is a major factor. I have an 810 with 5 cards in my name (oldest is around 10 years old). Never cancel any cards for the same reason.

like

The hard credit inquiry will cause a small drop at first, but over time your score will increase significantly due to lower overall utilization (assuming you pay it off each month), more accounts, and higher average age of accounts.

like

5 points off your score for new card openings (hard inquiry) and usually 5 points off for closing an account too (not recommended; the only thing I charge to one of my cards is my monthly Spotify bill to make sure there’s a payment history). These hard inquiries will stay on your credit report for 2 years.

Thank you guys! I will open a second account :)

Am I crazy to take a pay cut to “chase my dream”? Manager looking to leave Bain - I want to do corporate sustainability - I got an offer for a traditional corp strategy job at $195k base, $23k bonus (no longer-term incentives aka no equity / profit sharing), so similar to current comp except for NAP, but am hoping something sustainability-related comes through. Right now in talks for a sustainability director role that would be closer to $160k base / $20k bonus. (More in comments)

I’ve seen a couple posts lately with comments saying that people should not use a Roth 401k. Does the logic below capture the spirit of that concept?
1. Use trad. 401k to reduce taxable income now. Convert to trad. IRA once retired, then convert gradually to Roth IRA (ladder, SEPP, etc.) at lowest marginal tax rate
2. Use Roth IRA (and/or backdoor Roth) to take advantage of tax free growth and ability to withdraw principal early without penalty

Always been a fan of FIRE and reading about it has definitely helped my finances but I can’t help but wonder if the movement is more about lifestyle change than early retirement.

After you achieve FI,you basically have to maintain the lifestyle that got you there.

What if you want to go on a lavish vacation or buy that flatscreen TV? Are you supposed to do away with material goods entirely? I suppose you could keep working for discretionary $ and live off interest but then you’re not retired.

I’m currently working with a senior level HR candidate. This individual has a doctorate in business with a focus in HR, her SPHR, Federal, and private sector experience at the singer level, and has a fabulous personality. I’m curious is anyone else having difficulties play some candidates like this? At this point I’m starting to think it’s racial or her sex based of the lack of interest in this candidate. Any thoughts?
