Lol, I used to work at Sears auto center while in college both as a tech and salesman. What do you want to know?
In Sears case, the brand name was generally enough to get people (generally older folks and people who still use AAA) in the door. We also had a national presence so that was good. Otherwise, people usually call around to shop prices and go with whoever is lowest.
The margins on tires are pretty low but people usually spend $400-$1200 on a set so there still is profit to be had. We really pushed the road hazard warranties as those are pure profit.
Not sure about all the risks but there is a big liability component. We once installed tires and one of them happened to fall off several days later due to lack of tightening of bolts. That customer understandably sued.
You typically have two types of customers. Those with flats/blowouts/failed inspection that need tires whenever and those that wait for sales. We had big rushes during summer sales like Memorial Day, 7/4, Black Friday etc, and after the first snow storm in winter people rushed in to buy snow tires.
Not a business I recommend going into but I guess if you have a good franchise in a good location, it can be rewarding.
