If you have the $ flexibility do it now! PA or accounting in general (Industry) will be here when you get back. Best to do it while you're young and uncommitted
Agreed there is a limited period in your life in which something like this is practical. Really be thinking about your motivations and if/how the Peace Corps serves that purpose vis a vis an alternative option. Is it a a break, an experience, a resume builder, a desire to serve, or any combination.
I wanted to do this when I was an associate. Unfortunately, I didn’t do it and always wonder what would have happened if I had.
Think about why you want to do it, what your motivation is, what you expect to do when you get out, etc. and then make a decision from there.
I had a friend who did it and loved it, fwiw.
Don’t be scared, follow your heart. You’ll figure everything out.
Questionable advice imo
You're 24. If you know what you're getting into (it will likely be hard work, you will be broke, it may be lonely), I highly recommend it.
If you want back in accounting you will be able to get back in easily.
We are on this planet a limited amount of time, and if this is something you are passionate about, this is probably your only chance to do it. You may get to age 55+ and be financially stable enough to do it...but you may not live that long, or you may not be in good enough health to do it at an advanced age.
At 24 you can do it, come back, and then grow in your career (either accounting or otherwise), and find a partner and buy a house and save for retirement if that's your dream. Or you can go to business school. Or whatever you decide to do based on your experience in the Corps.
Is your intention a public accounting hiatus or a ultimately a career change? Or undecided?
Probably ultimately a career change
My ex is in the peace corps and is in one of the “cozier” sites in an easier country and I believe the majority of her cohort has dropped out. Really make sure this is something you want to do before doing anything.
The War Corps is cooler
If you can make it work financially then why the hell would anyone tell you not to? Its a potentially life-altering experience and if you leave on good terms then you’ve at worst set your 40+ year career back a year.
Don’t
How old are you? If you are young and don’t have any obligations why not?
24, so you’re right this would be the time
I did a Fulbright after working for a year. Best choice of my career.
You might not need to quit. Talk to HR or your coach to see if there is an option to take a sabbatical.
A former colleague from my office recently quit, and is joining the peace corps this spring in a business development role. His directors and partners took it really well and told him he always had a job if he wanted it. If this is something you want, do it. You can always come back and get an accounting job later in life if that’s what you want.
Public Accounting, Banking, Consulting will all need bodies to do the work, so doors are not going to close when you leave. In fact, more might open. Apply and see where things go first. Have the conversation about leaving when you have a foot out the door. Good luck.
