Have had three kids. I’ve stayed in the same job (despite wanting to leave several times) because I do think it’s better to go thru pregnancy and return to work with a company you know and who knows you. You have the credibility already and if you need to coast for a bit you can do it. Versus be in a new job where you feel like you need to bust your ass to prove something. Just remember you can always leave after you get back from mat leave!
Personal opinion: consulting is amazing for mat leave because you have flexibility to truly unplug and roll on/off projects. I would have conversations about taking lighter roles to accommodate burn out / support this major life transition. You can always decide to job search at the end of your amazing mat leave, which I’ve known so many to do!
I chose to come back and left 6 months later. I’m pregnant with #2 and it’s much harder to think about planning a backfill/work piling up while I’m out.
Last thing to consider is some companies require a year of service (not all) so if you decide to change - make sure to ask about in interview process. Doesn’t hurt to start looking now in case the right opp comes along!
Really helpful( thank you! Interesting to hear about the contrasting experiences. Good luck to you!
