We have a lot of kids whose parents can’t afford school supplies. Because of this, I keep all required supplies for every possible project in my room. I also supply those kids with binders, etc. with that being said, our district used pandemic funds to supply every single student with all school supplies this year.

So you don't have to buy supplies but you do because you are kind. I appreciate that. Many teachers imply they must spend their own money when in reality it is a choice. Thank you so much for your response. Have a wonderful and safe year!

I think education has evolved in a way where teachers have to take on a additional roles and have greater responsibilities without having additional resources available to them. Also, I know for me high school wasn't terribly difficult without all of these things, but I imagine people who struggled in school didn't have the support or attention they needed. So maybe spending more money now because we recognize that education can be more interactive and that kids learn better with more resources available for them, but our education system hasn't caught up with that to provide teachers with the support & $$$ they need to provide it (so we end up spending our own money)

Yes exactly! And thank you for starting this conversation :) The discussions I like to see on here, actually about education!

I spend a lot on my room/classroom items, but I’m very particular about stuff. I’ve purchased bookcases, small furniture items, books, items for escape rooms and game based learning. I’m more affected by my surroundings than I’d like and can live fairly comfortable with my salary. It can also be done on the cheap with handed down items, thrift store finds, or a minimalist style. There are also options like a classroom wishlist on Amazon, donors choose projects, local grants, and teacher supply giveaways. Today, most schools use technology and there is less of a need for other supplies. The other stuff is just extra, depending on the basic needs of the student body and what you are willing to donate.

Thank you. I am trying to empathize with the many educators who imply that they must provide supplies when it is actually a choice, be it a kind one to those in need.

TECHNOLOGY

Can you please elaborate to help me understand? Are you spending your own money on technology?

I’m a third year tax associate with my LLM. I left the IRS for a small boutique M&A firm that had a great reputation in my region. I have been at the firm for 3 weeks and I just found out that 2 of the 4 partners are leaving and taking a bunch of the senior associates with them. The only tax partner is leaving to go in-house and semi retire. I am going to be the only tax associate at the firm. So what’s the play here, look for a way out as fast as possible or ride it out for the time being?
