Thinking bout an MBA to get into client side (brand manager) role. Only 2 years of agency experience though. Thoughts?

I’d think long and hard about it in this job market. Switch jobs and get a 25% to 50% bump or go into debt. If you have the cash, invest it. MBA’s on the client side aren’t the prerequisite they used to be. But by all means, get the MBA if you enjoy learning and it makes you happy. Otherwise, the return might be hard to justify in the long run.

I’m not making a value judgment, just observing that it’s the case. (I am an adjunct instructor in an MBA program so between that and my actual agency/client experience, I have a decent-sized data set.)

As to why, I think it’s largely signaling, in the same way that law school doesn’t really train you to practice law, but it does serve as a reasonably good filter for selecting people who will succeed at practicing law.

That said, brand management is a lot more than marketing, and a good business school program will expose you to things you don’t get as an agency strategist.

Not needed just to move into a BM role — might help as you try to work your way into an exec/c-suite role. Given your experience I’d make the switch first, gain some experience, then pursue the MBA.

Any suggestions on how to make the move? Besides impressing current clients because I do not want to work for them 😅

I think it depends on what school. If it’s a top school with good recognition I think it’s worth it. As someone with an MBA I will say that it was totally worth it for me based purely on what I learned. It changed the way I approached and framed challenges and the way I structure my thinking while helping to understand companies from a big picture perspective. Where I went, average work experience prior to beginning the program was 5 years so you have time.

If you’re going to do it do it now.

Why not try an Masters of Science? More research focussed and I feel like not as much of a stigma around like wow you did a bunch of group case studies, vs oh you did directed original research in a field and contributed to the overall body of knowledge in the subject. Probably cheaper too.

What about the Mark Ritson course?

Could that be a bridging before taking a major leap into MBA? Most clients know this course and could see it as beneficial and not major outlay so early on?

I’ve not done the course (however I am keen) but I do see clients often talking about it and having it in their LinkedIn Profiles.

Agree. I’d also start with Marketing before considering the Brand Management one.

Go for it. If you’re doing a traditional program, first round apps are due in the fall, so you’ll have almost 2.5y by then and 3y by the time you start. That seems about average. If you don’t have leadership examples from your career, maybe you can get those from extracurriculars. Anything that shows you take initiative and play well with others, plus the grades and test scores - B-school will teach you the rest.

I took this route and am a huge proponent of it. It will be much easier to get a BM role and you may need it if you want to work at a fortune 500. People often forget that an MBA is more than just a degree. You'll make connections with some very influential people who can help you in all aspects of life. An MBA is about the networking and the opportunities more than anything else. Whether you like it it not it gives you access to people you would never have access to otherwise.

The people who recently seem to be incessantly saying they are "proud of Joe Biden as our leader" sound more cultish than anything MAGA. The facts just don't add up. Our current administration is a disaster. Joe Biden and Kamala Harris are a disaster. Whataboutisms or ignorance wont change that. Trying to use emotional social issues as a mechanism to make people outraged isn't going to work anymore after what the country is enduring - economically most notably - with the current administration.

I fear that if I make the move to IC, they’ll leave as they see opp for advancement as connected to team mgmt. Past coaching hasn’t “clicked.”
