Thinking of binge watching mad men because the show is awesome. What do our creative friends think of the show? 1950 aside is the creative and sales process reflective of advertising?

Show is amazing. I wish I lived in that age so my job would be talking to people and thinking rather than staring at a stupid laptop all day.

I’m currently in the middle of my fourth or fifth rewatch. So many little nuances you don’t see the first few times.

I’ve worked at three agencies mentioned on the show. That style of ad agency life is nearly extinct. It started to recede in the early 2000s and then really started to go away in the early 2010s as mobile and social media took over, which fueled the in-house trend.

There are some things that could be applicable today. For example, Harry Crane looks and acts like a stereotypical grumpy media guy.

The creative ideation is heavily dramatized, nobody comes up with killer ideas out of the blue like that in front of clients. Good ideas usually pop up after many hours (days, even) of squeezing out dozens of bad ideas first. We never show anyone our bad ones, we only show our few brilliant ones. But I always loved those ideation scenes in Mad Men. The magic of the “aha” moment still carries over and the show romanticizes it very well. The brainstorming banter between creative partners on the show captures a little bit of that, as well as when they show Don jotting down an idea that pops into his head after seeing something inspiring out in the real world. I live for those moments.

I’ve been in tons of marketing meetings when the agency is pitching their idea and it isn’t that different than when Don is doing his thing, at the start at least. People usually do something more relaxed than that, but the overall style and goal is the same.

I tried but couldn’t get into it.

It’s entertaining. I’ve heard it’s an okay representation of the ad industry as it was at that time, but yeah it’s not how ad agencies look today. (I’ll be forever grateful to it for slightly lessening the number of people who ask me how I Iike working in copyright law.)

Think the biggest difference on the creative side is that (now?) copywriters and art directors work together in tandem, usually as partners in two-person creative teams. Copywriters and art directors are equally responsible for coming up with ideas.

Brilliant

I dream of living in that world

Blood oxygen dropped dangerously low and bounced back in a few minutes. Chills , cold sweats. My newest one is that my legs are so achey and sore it feels like they were beaten with a bat , just nonstop pain and can’t sleep. Anyone else experience these? My professional life at the moment is far from ideal. I’ve been on quarantine (long story, but a good one) for the last seven years. Royalties from my books don’t pay the bills. My entrepreneurial pursuits remain hampered. For the interim, I’ve been looking for a remote opportunity where I can leverage my skills in marketing, sales, social media, and elsewhere for a decent sum. I have a social media presence which, in recent years, reached millions. There has to be something exciting I can do.
