Consulting Moms

Thinking of going for Director this year but also going on Maternity Leave in November for 5 months. Terrible timing I know. BUT I've already met Director sales goals and utilization will be avg for manager. I'm at the top level for Manager so can't progress any further unless I go for promotion.... Thoughts on going for it? Nervous about having a new baby and being a new Director (if I get it).

Lean. In. Do it while you can and then lean out when you need it. Once the baby is born you won't meet those goals for a while. Good luck!

Thanks for the encouragement :). I feel like the firm is already treating me differently because I'm pregnant and I want to prove that we can do it all (or at least TRY)

PWC1. I'm guessing you are not a parent, because your question doesn't even need to be asked. Of course she is not going to want to leave her newborn baby to work 24/7 across the country. That's what parental leave is for - caring for your newborn child. However, if OP is already meeting Director level goals why should she have to wait 5 months, then come back - with an infant child - and prove herself all over again? Earning the promotion, at that time, will likely be more difficult. That's why young professionals work their tail off before starting a family.

I’m actually on maternity leave right now, about to start my parental leave. I gave birth to two identical boys and one twin is still in the NICU going through several surgeries since they were born 3 months early. I asked that question because I thought I would be okay going back to Consulting and traveling but I definitely don’t think that anymore. I’m trying to switch to an HR role where I can work remotely 24/7. All of my priorities changed after I gave birth. Consulting was my dream job since undergrad and I loved my job. I had great mentors and I love the firm. Everyone thought I was on a fast track to partner but I am totally okay with not coming back to Consulting. I just know how directors stress their selves out all the time on projects and trying to win pursuits that I personelku wouldnt even want to have to worry about work when I’d rather be with my kids. There are also lots of consideration to think about. If you become a director before you start your leave, you’ll get directors salary while you’re gone instead of manager. Idk how important that is for you and you have to think about the possibility of post part in depression and a prolonged maternity leave than what you and the firm expected. Do you need to go back to work right away or can you survive from your husband’s salary? You can take unpaid leave if so. I’m saying all this to give a perspective, not to bash or sound negative. I used to be all about leaning in but now, my priorities have changed where I want to put motherhood first before everything else :) let me know what you guys think.

I can attest it is possible to make Director the year you are on maternity leave. I was out December through April a few years ago. I had already had the conversation with coach, RP, champion for partner case and other mentors prior to leave. I was writing my director case as soon as the criteria was available. If you are ready for director and have support within the firm, maternity leave isn't a reason to wait another year.

I do think PWC *can be* a good place to make this happen judging from my experiences and these responses.

My thought, it's NOT terrible. You're already there, so do it. Good luck!

It can work, especially if you have a strong reputation going into it. You also need some some supportive partners who will have your back. I actually think it's easier to make your schedule what you need it to be because if you are good at leading your team, you won't have to be on site every day like you do as a manager.

I made Director when I was out on leave, but my leave was March - Sept so I was there for almost the whole performance year. I think for you, it's more a matter of communicating and aligning on expectations with your Partners

Thanks for all the support! I'm more concerned about not being able to raise my child once I come back :/. Any Director moms who have figured out how to meet their goals and spend time with their baby?

See how flexible the *practice* can be for you. We know PwC technically can be. But only time will tell if your clients and leadership will be. I've seen various stories play out. But even if you make it, then struggle a bit and have to leave you're leaving at a higher level. It will be hard to keep it up long term for sure. But gun for it then deal if/when you have to. Seriously. Read Lean In.

The more important question is, “do you think you’re going to be able to handle leaving your newborn and going back to work as a new director working 24/7 across the country?”

Pwc 1 thanks for sharing. I am afraid of the 24/7 thing. In fact torn between going back reduced as a manager and going up for promotion. Just don't know how I'm going to feel once she is here. It's my first so have no idea. But I think I may be more mad at myself for not trying....

5 months pregnant with our second, a boy. Our first is a girl. We’re debating circumcising him or not. My husband is, and everyone we know typically does it. But I think it’s a barberic practice. Opinions? Posting to get more of a wide range of opinions (nationally in us and globally). What would you do? Did you do? We will obviously talk to our doctor too but curious on general sentiment around circumcision.
