I just switched last year and I’d say it’s better to learn agency side. Faster pace, more briefs and exposure to a multitude of clients. We have not one single junior on our team, and I think they would have had a harder time without the know-how and experience of how to protect work and navigate the process. Not a lot of hand holding.
That said, I’m way happier and it’s an improvement from agencies in every possible way.
My experience with startups is there are not a lot of mid level roles. Lots of senior positions and entry positions for marketers/design/etc. more seniority definitely would help.
There is no time like the present. Being senior will be harder (fewer roles). Go now!!!
What role are you in?
Moving to Sr Art Director at the end of the month
Yeah that makes a lot of sense, thank you
Well I definitely don’t consider myself junior, I was wondering if I should wait to be ready for an ACD title before making the move. Thank you for sharing!
ACD @ an agency < ACD @ tech/client
In what way? Skills? Salary?
They're not mesaasured the same way. An ACD at agency might require 6-8 yrs of exp and make $135k-165k and may or may not oversee people. If so, they typically over see up to 4 creatives. An ACD or Creative Lead, Design Lead, Design Manager (usually they're not copy roles) at a Tech company over sees an entire team and requires 12+ yrs of experience and can make anywhere from $165k+. This is just my knowledge, as I'm sure others might have different insight.
