How do you combat scope creep?
Hi Fishies! (Is that what we are? I’m going with it)
I just came across a Google Research and Insights role that got me SUPER excited and I was about to apply when I had the idea of seeing if anyone would be willing to give me a referral. I understand (and respect) that most of you Googlers on here feel that a referral is only useful if you know the person but I would be happy to jump on the phone to give you some info about me. It would mean so much! 4 YOE at a major audio steaming service

What kind of experiene do you have?
5 years experience in software development engineering, Bach in computer science. Just wondering if I should start talking to the managers on my team and if it's smart/okay to let them know I'm interested in management. Hoping one of my managers can give me real feedback. Also wondering if anyone's company does a trial run/observed management style type of thing for lead engineer positions. I'm not sure if mine does.
"Management" is a pretty broad term. Are you looking to stay in SWE and just move up the ranks, or are you aiming bigger?
Just move up the ranks. Not shooting for VP or SVP or anything crazy but I feel capable of being a lead with some more experience, and yeah EM doesn't sound too bad either to be honest. I'm fine with taking my time, just wanna know the best way to go about it.

Are you currently a lead? That would seem to be the bridge you're looking for.
I think it also means working outside the scope of you're duties now. Are you the go to guy? Do you recommend process improvements across your larger team? Etc etc
How do you feel about working with people? How stable are you in matters of stress-tolerance? I think pros and cons may be negotiated with but it'll be your drive and endurance that'll help you stay. You'll be on top of things when you become part of management yet a lot will also be your responsibility.
Measure the role you want to be promoted and your estimated efficiency in this area. You have to make sure it will be okay. You can observe this by making a general list of positives and negatives.
If you have experience of leading a team, this can be a pro for you. However, if you don't have such kind of experience, it might be hard for you.
