Zion was the one that left the greatest impression on me
I did a Utah road trip last year and this was my route: SLC, Moab (Canyonlands and arches), capital reef, Escalante National Forest, Bryce Canyon, Zion. Flew back to DC via SLC but Vegas is closer
It’s a really incredible road trip. Utah is beautiful and unique
We did a 15 day trip this summer that included Arches, Canyonlands, Grand Teton, Yellowstone and Craters of the moon ( and few more day trips to other places )with my kids (15 and 10). They loved every bit of it. We took a family poll on the best moments. Arches is great for hiking especially in the morning. Yellowstone is great for wildlife. Grand Teton was voted the best for boating and biking, and Craters of the Moon for the most outlandish park we visited. DM me if you need more info
The booking runs out fast btw. We booked in Feb for a trip in August.
Thinking either spring break late April or early summer like mid june
Funny you should say that. My older son has a friend that was recommending Zion. And my youngest actually hasn’t been to gc. Do you think this is a crazy plan? We don’t like to rough it too much :) so this gives us a few nights in nice hotels too.
1. Fly into phx early, stay at Westin kirland
2. Drive to gc, sunset, stay in gc
3. Gc hiking, stay in gc
4. Drive to Vegas, stop at Hoover dam, arrive late night in Vegas
5. Vegas day/pool, 2nd night in vegas
6. Leave Vegas early to Zion, hike all day, night in zion
7. Leave early to slc, stay 1 night
8. Depart back to dc
Nice. How would you rank those? Bryce Vs zion vs arches vs canyons.
There is rafting down the Green River before it enters canyonlands and merges with Colorado. We also drove down to 4 corners as the kids wanted a corny photo oppty. I found Moab to a cool chilled out place . Lots of good food and kitschy curio shops. As others have said, Canyonlands is large and 2/3 of the park ( the maze and the needles section aren’t easily accessible for most families ) . Arches though is a fun place with lots of hiking opptys.
We saw GC and Bryce last year. Planning to go back to Zion next year
Strong recommendation AGAINST Yosemite. It’s packed most times of the year these days, but especially over spring break periods. The hiking is best if you’re fairly athletic (ie may not be best for kids).
I know it’s an unpopular opinion, but in general I just find Yosemite overrated (and I’ve been to >15 national parks). Totally second the Utah itineraries above, or PNW (Mt Rainier, Olympia, Crater Lake).
