Thinking of trying for our first but how do you handle travel and childcare afterwards? SO works near home but seems like a lot to leave for 3 nights, no family around..remote/local roles only?

Logistically, you can make it work, though it’s not always easy and is almost certainly expensive. One of the good things about consulting is that you have a nice salary, which is very helpful with young children. I have an 18 month old- she goes to daycare during the day, but we also have someone who comes 2x a week in the evenings when I’m on a travel project (and sometime when I’m local). She does daycare pickup and is there through bedtime. It provides an extra pair of hands for my husband and gives him the flex to work late, if needed. Also, crucially, we’ve grown over time to really trust her and she does overnight care when we both have business trips during the week (not often, but happens).

Emotionally making it work, well that’s a different story. You have no idea what it’s going to be like. I’ve found that 2 nights of travel a week for multiple weeks is the max I can handle without feeling like it’s too much time away. But everyone is different and you don’t know what it’ll be like till you’re in that position.

I’m pregnant with my first and have been doing remote work with about 50% travel for a while now. My plan is to work with my project to be remote after I come back from maternity leave (my husband is military and will also be deployed for 3 more months after my maternity leave ends). Then slowly add travel back in as I can. I’m on a long term project where the senior managers are supportive of this. If you can do something similar is going to depend a lot on how cool your managers are and is a conversation I probably wouldn’t have until after 12 weeks

I’m 13 weeks pregnant with my first right now and I currently travel. I’m going to talk to my project leadership about working remote/not traveling every week when I come back from maternity leave. Probably will eventually leave to industry though to be honest...

I do not plan to travel when I have my baby. Work out to NY so there are many local casework options for me. But I put family first and if this career doesn’t allow me to put my kids to bed most nights then I will leave.

I was lucky that I got put on a long term project with the same client who doesn’t require every week travel .. talk to your leadership and see what can be done. You should always ask for what you need

Meanwhile, my mother starts telling me that we should “insist” he leave asap, because “being in the NICU has its risks too” (referencing some obscure infection my older brother got in a NICU 35+ years ago). I’m not crazy to actually listen to the doctors and leave him there until they say he’s ready right??

Had to work 2 projects that required me to work day, night, and multiple weekends because SM relied mostly on me and the rest of my team weren't capable of delivering quality work hence more weight shifted to my plate. Few sleepless nights have been hard and I always hope it doesn't hurt my baby. Thank God, my second trimester is easier as nausea's gone by then. Countdown to 5 more weeks when this project finally where I'll be 30 wks prego, it just reminds me how strong we all are. I'm also asking the same SM to approve my maternity leave in 2 weeks and he doesn't know I'm pregnant yet (I don't show much and don't disclose unless asked explicitly because I feel shame due to being a 2nd year analyst). He always thanks me in front of partners for my exemplary work, and I will just be so proud when he finds out I managed to do all that while pregnant 💜
