Why?
It's not a strike if your agency as whole is inviting all the women to take part. It doesn't prove the intended point.
Yeah... I'm more on the side of PF1 - why? As for Jr Writer - it's NOT a day off. It's a strike. And notoriously actions like strikes are the only thing that encourage "fucking change." Do you have a better idea for mass action?
It's also not a strike if they're deducting it from your vacation or suck days..
For the record, my agency made no formal reply, but I'm a female manager who encouraged her coworkers to take tomorrow off. Change starts from within.
A lot of agencies are outright saying to go for it and take the day off, and while that's really nice of them to respect the movement, I don't need a day off, I need fucking change. So yeah, I have mixed feelings about it too.
My point was just that agencies that are encouraging women to take part in the strike should do more than just say it's okay to strike that day. If they really care about the cause, they should lay out what they're doing to help it.
@jr writer- I think we'd totally get along in real life, because I completely agree with your rationale. My main problem was, I want all women under me to take the day off in solidarity, and that I'd be in to cover. Ideally, all of our efforts would result in the reaction of 72&Sunny.
A white collar strike doesn't make that much sense to me. I'm still responsible for all my shit....taking a day off would just mean having to work late the next few days. I'm wearing red today, though.
@jr writer I agree, agencies SHOULD do more. But @jr writer and @AAD, if your plan is to wait until your agency tells you that it's okay to strike (even though it's SUPER lame that most are not) then you've missed the point of a strike altogether. The point is not to wait for support from the stockholders. The point is to prove they need us.
And @AAD, I'd sooner take a vacation or sick day than wait for my agency to tell me I can go on strike without using either.
I get that, and support it. But it doesn't prove they need us if they're giving you a go ahead and are therefore totally prepared and ready to compensate as needed.
(Also not trying to be super argumentative, just genuinely explaining my point so you don't think I'm missing the positives of striking. I come in peace! ✌🏻If you can effectively strike and make that point wherever you work, rock on.)
The approach of celebrating women and their contributions via a strike is very confusing to me. And by making it a day where all women strike it makes it seem like if the issue is with men...when it is sometimes but sometimes it is other women that's the issue. I guess what happens after #IWD will be what matters?
AAD, yes you take your PTO for the strike, or you don't get paid. That's what a strike is.
I see some did get the point of what I was saying. No idea what those talking about waiting are referring to. Never said, implied, or meant waiting for anything. Just that people are genuinely unclear on what "striking" means in labor relations. Mr copy and few others elaborated a bit better, thanks. If you're being "penalized" by having a PTO day being deducted that's not striking and hurting the company/economy. That's you being off from work and deciding to spend your day off demonstrating... Which is fine but don't be confused you're striking....that's all
