This fall we are getting a new administrator who has no classroom teaching experience. I don’t know what to say. They do have experience in education, just not classroom teaching experience. Thoughts? Is this a thing a now?

They should have a minimum of 5 years experience. I can’t imagine this going well

The person possibly won’t last long. Even a former physical education teacher is better as admin! I worked for the latter, and he drove me and many of my colleagues crazy! Sometimes, though, such a person can surprise you, give you a different, helpful perspective. It just depends on their objective and your district’s expectations. If your school is merely a stepping stone to a district position, the person probably won’t make too many waves. And then there’s the Peter Principle, promotion into a job requiring different skills from what the person has. With luck, this person will grow into the job or move on.

Best advice I got when becoming a teacher was to smile, nod your head, then go to your room, close the door and do whatever you think is best.

This happens more than you think. In the town we live in, two of the four principals were P.E. teachers. They have the most free time to work on their master’s degree. Just a theory.

We had a guidance counselor that was never in a classroom. Try that one.

Are they good at their job? Then what do I care.

HOW does this happen???

Just looking at this objectively, but what a principal does, really doesn’t have a great impact on what goes on in a classroom. That’s up to you, at least in my experience. I’ve had 4 principals and never once have any of them impacted my classroom positively or negatively. I am not one who is hard set on a principal needing classroom experience. Specifically, what does classroom experience give a principal in how they do their job? They need to have strong communication skills, decision making, delegation, policy making, team building, etc. all of those things can be excelled at without classroom experience. If the building has a strong leadership TEAM, and the principal is able to listen to their “cabinet” so to speak and then make decisions, I don’t see classroom experience as all that necessary. There are plenty of principals with years of classroom experience that are terrible principals. That said, I’d be happy to hear thoughts on what specifically classroom experience does to make a better principal.

Same to you! I just think different people have different perspectives based on life experiences and even if those are different from mine, they still hold value. Just real quick on a point you made in your last comment. All other things being equal, I would take a principal candidate with 5 years of recent classroom experience over one with 20 years of classroom experience, the most recent being 15 years ago. Our "industry" changes so fast and you are absolutely right, that those former teachers become very much disconnected from what the reality of a classroom is today.

Typical White Castle thinking.

It means it's irrelevant to our profession.

It has been for years. All theory no practical experience in the ebb and flow of the classroom with now an increasing degree of student levels in the classroom.

Good luck. I feel for you!

It depends. Are they willing to listen and to learn? Do they have good general management skills? What is their philosophy/practice when it comes to disciplining students? If any or all of these are a problem, then that's bad. If these are good, they'll be okay, and so will you.
