I’ve never called someone bougie as an intentional insult.. I do agree it’s not exactly a term of endearment, but I use it to joke with my girlfriends. When they’re demanding nice things, I’ll laugh and call them bougie.. or I’ll even call myself it at times- but it’s always in jest, not in condescension. Could he have been joking?
Sorry OP, I think it’s okay to be different but if he’s that self-conscious and hung up about it, perhaps it’s not the best fit.
