It makes perfect sense that people do not flock to jobs paying too little to survive on.
The Republicans in my state are like "wow they're surviving on unemployment, we should get rid of as much unemployment as possible".
It's crazy to me how they don't see the absurdity of allowing wages to be impossibly low.
The market will adjust, and restauranteurs will have to raise wages. It just takes time.
I think we should set a reasonable minimum wage even if it means sometimes people are priced out. It needs to be higher, for sure. The free market doesn't care about being a decent human, and the dignity of a human life. If we let the free market decide what to do with Earth's resources, we would destroy the planet to get rich.
But the market will adjust enough to get workers in the door, because the free market does work to an extent.
Restaurant workers make money off tips, and the average price of meals have increased since the 1990s. I waited tables all throughout college, and made significantly (5-7x) more money than my friends in that 4 year span. Find a good restaurant, and the pay is fantastic! I would never want to work in a model where I’m paid a higher wage, but tips are reduced

Employers could definitely work in their own business. Maybe then it will be easier to see why poverty wages are insufficient to hire enough employees.
But you still need to make minimum wage. It still as ridiculously low but is more than 2.13
Not really a good comparison since the minimum per hour would still be the federal minimum wage or higher. Minimum wage in 1991 was $4.25 and minimum wage in 2021 is $7.25 with many states now having a higher wage minimum than fed. No one is getting paid just $2.13 an hour right now
M1, I’m not saying those working at red lobster are making a substantial amount. I’m just saying they’re making at least minimum wage and that’s not $2.13. Sure, you can say adjusted for inflation that the current wages hasn’t caught up but you can not say they got paid more in 1991 than 2021 if you’re looking at it just dollar for dollar

Granted the base portion should have gone up. However bulk of their comp is tips and food prices have definitely inflated since 1991. So to say their take home pay is entirely stagnant is one sided and self serving. If we’re talking why restaurants can’t find help currently, let’s please acknowledge the fact a lot more has to do with the unemployment bonus and the stimulus checks. It’s simple math, if I’m paid more not to work, why would I work. Not saying servers shouldn’t make more, but the argument made by Dan Price here is choc full of fallacy.

OP found a place that doesn’t have tipped employees to argue that tipped employees should get the same base pay. Ridiculous.
