This has probably been brought up before, but has anyone left big consulting for a startup boutique firm? Thoughts, comments, points of concern?

Work can be much more difficult to accomplish.... Fewer (if any) templates, gaps in subject matter expertise are more common, and you'll find yourself doing more work regarding the actual running of the firm. Almost left for a boutique last year, and this is what I saw and heard from their employees.

like

Similar to D2, you don't have the same support networks, training opportunities, and resources available that a larger firm does

I was at another big 4, left for a boutique, then came back to the big 4... I would say in general it is true that it's more responsibility, more work... high rish, high reward. My particular experience was bad because my immediate supervisor was a smart dude but not ambitious and I got bored. In the big 4 you have more options and your performance is not tied to one person. However I do sometimes get tired of the politics and I would go to a boutique under different circumstances. It depends on your vertical too, some business lines have promising small companies servicing the market.

I want to get my PhD, but all of the programs I want require a full time commitment for the first year. What are my options? Is a sabbatical an option? Or would I have to straight up resign? Utilization notwithstanding (I’m a GPS consultant)…is it possible to go part time? I completed my master’s full time while a full time Deloitte consultant. I know school can be done, but for PhDs they usually want you to also work as a TA. Additionally, I am not interested in online programs.
