Walk me through a project you’re particularly proud of. What was the problem and how did you solve it?
This is where it falls on the recruiter. I’ve worked with ones who spam resumes because they’ve lacked the interest of learning the tech side of things. Which is candidly why it’s disappointing and leads to questions on how many years of react do you have or some other lazy question. Years of experience doesn’t matter in tech, it’s not linear at all.
I have monthly brown bags with engineering or product to help me understand how things operate from their world. Taking some pride in understanding the teams we support leads to a faster time to fill and an overall better experience across the board.
Depends on the role. What skills are you looking for?
Tbh I don’t get involved in the tech (for the most part). High level.
But it’s all the same thing. I’m looking for passion, engagement, and (especially these days) answering more questions than I’m asking.
Again it’s mostly informal. I get them talking about their current work. See what gets them excited. What’s their motivation: is it growth into management? Socializing? Generalizing? The specific project?
It’s been proven over and over that a specific set of behavioural questions proves nothing. Actually getting people working, works. But I can’t see any organization willing to take THAT risk.
