This is a very subjective question, but I’m interested in getting a variety of opinions. I graduated in 2019 and got what I initially thought was a dream job in local government dealing with civil matters. I’ve reached a point where I’m getting very bored with the work, which is 75% contract review. My talents and interests are in writing and research, which I had been told I’d be doing tons of during my interview. Do I jump ship? When? And what sort of job is ideal for a new lawyer?

It's never to early to start networking and doing informational interviews. I would try to stay a year.

Separately, I'd speak gingerly with your manager about broadening the scope of work you're receiving. If he or she seems open to it, that's your answer. Note also that it is hard for a manager to give you more unless you are really excelling at what you do have, so bear that in mind.

No job is perfect. And everyone is feeling the COVID isolation in one form or another. The question is whether you see progression and growth ahead or boredom. Is this job enough for you?

Do your state trial courts employ staff research attorneys? I worked as a research attorney for three years in the civil law and motion department of a California superior court, and my entire job was just researching and writing. I got a new set of cases each week, so there was always something new to work on.

I work for a local government and the issues that arise are varied and diverse (as you mentioned you had hoped for in one of your responses). Do you work for a small, rural village or something? Or has your department pigeonholed you in to contract review? And what sort of contracts? Feel free to message me, I feel like there’s a lot of open question to discuss, and then immediate answer may not be to jump ship quite yet
