This is an interesting article on ADHD and executive function disorder that might be helpful to others: https://healthyadhd.com/adhd-executive-function/

My son now struggles with ADHD as well (of course) and I am digging deeper for his sake to figure out how to help little ones too young for medication. Knowing I was able to become an attorney even though I wasn’t diagnosed until the summer between my junior and senior years in college gives me hope we can tackle this earlier for him and have him see success for himself.

I suffered more with the social stuff than school as a kid because I loved learning and I was smart. I’ve had more trouble as an adult working than I ever did when I was young as I never needed to develop strategies and tools to work with my adhd. I have always been medicated but loving school was enough. So the number one thing you can do is to help him develop the tools and mechanisms he needs. Also routines! All the routines!

I will also say that I did martial arts. My younger brother was more of the typical adhd than me (honestly I was only diagnosed when I was because my brother was going through testing and mum did lots of reading) and I know martial arts really helped him a lot.

I have the same troubles. I wasn’t diagnosed until I was out of school, because I was smart and also because my mom kept me on a disciplined routine and taught me basic coping skills like “every class has a color-coded folder where all of your work goes,” “write down the homework in this planner as soon as you enter class,” and “always put your backpack in the same spot so you don’t lose it.” Any slip ups were put down to me being bored or careless or lazy.

But adult life? That’s a struggle. There are so many competing priorities and responsibilities. And being an attorney is really a struggle. Trying to keep on top of my case load always feels like I’m balancing an asymmetrical jug on my head while standing on the edge of a skyscraper on a windy day.

I guess I’m saying it’s worth getting treated early, but particularly worth learning coping skills early. There are a lot of competing demands for your attention.

I was diagnosed as a child with ADHD and feel it really “othered” me. I had to walk to the principals office to get my medication and I had to be mysteriously pulled out of class for all sorts of reasons related to treating my ADHD. Teachers talking to my mom in front of me like I couldn’t hear them saying “She needs extra help” “she can’t focus” “she’s not completing assignments” made me think I was stupid and really adopted that mentality until college. Do I have ADHD? Yes. But I also didn’t understand why math mattered at all and didn’t want to do the assignments because I couldn’t see they “why” behind it. I wanted to share this experience because I feel like my mom went way too intense way too fast with it and I stoped trying in school because I thought I was stupid. Your son is so lucky to have you helping him through this, but for what it’s worth, wanted to share this if it could be of any help.

Thank you for this perspective! He is really struggling with some behavior issues at school, so I am trying to balance that need to keep him from being kicked out (he’s in kindergarten and the school’s knee jerk reaction was multiple suspensions instead of trying to understand he is bright, but can’t physically sit still and is easily frustrated) with the need to feel normal. So, this is helpful.

I’m looking into possible counseling services that can get us on the steady path to “fitting in” with the school’s expectations. I never had hyperactivity. Just a lack of focus and impulse control. So, this aspect is new to me.

I’ve made it 5+ years in a NY M&A practice and have consistent exceeding expectations reviews. I’ve had a few mental breakdowns because of work during this time, but thankfully made it through. I’ve been in a near constant depressive/anxious state for family reasons for the last year and half, and am soon having my first kid. I’m scared shitless that I’ll spiral out of control both at work and at home if something doesn’t change soon. Any suggestions on how to keep this job and keep it together?

I keep outlook closed while working because the notifications are very distracting and I have this huge compulsion to respond right away. I planned to open it hourly and set alarms so I wouldn’t forget. My colleague next door mentioned politely that he could hear an alarm going off every hour. Anyone know of a solution to this predicament? I don’t see a way to make outlook hold notifications and push them through only once an hour, but there might be a way.

I just discovered I have vision tracking issues: my eyes don’t converge together in close-up work and they don’t track together. My brain apparently handles this by ignoring the signal from one of my eyes - and alternates throughout the day which eye signal it ignores. The treatment involves vision therapy (eye exercises). Apparently getting this fixed may help with concentration issues since my brain won’t be fighting me sitting still and reading all day. Has anyone done this? Did it help?

Billable hour question: is anyone else just completely incapable of keeping up with your time? I’ve been an attorney for 3 years now and tried everything I can think of to figure this out but I just can’t do it. It’s the same thing at the end of every month - staying up late entering in an entire month of time. Luckily most clients I work for are flat fee/percentage based but I still feel like a failure for not being able to do this thing that seemingly every other lawyer can do. Any tips?

One of my frustrations with myself (writing it out here so I can work on it) is that I will print out something that I need, such as a traffic collision report. I will read it without actually reading it. This results in spending time without actually retaining info. Does this happen to anyone else? I’ve found that I can actually focus when I truly force myself, but often this happens after I’ve discovered an error or an important piece of information that I should have noticed earlier.

I just saw an ad for an app called inflow that’s supposed to help manage adhd and create strategies to address things like putting off and staying on task. It’s $22 a month which is cheaper than a coach but more expensive than a planner. Odds that it will actually help vs. being another recurring charge that I keep putting off canceling because of my executive dysfunction?

Tired of my pharmacy. It’s a pointless phone call. Why do I have to repeat these shenanigans every month?! Is it just Rite Aid? Is CVS any better? So irritating.
