Yes. I heard first hand from our CCO that they wanted a creative (who happened to be female) to go to the pitch instead of her partner (who happened to be male) because she was a far superior presenter than him and he “sucked the life out of the work” when he presented. But to make him feel ok about the decision, he was told she went for casting to have a female present. He was understandably hugely bitter about that since he wasn’t given the context. And I felt bad foe her too since unbeknownst to her, they were telling him it had nothing to do with her ability.

like

That might be the case but that wasn’t what was driving the decision here. That was the convenient excuse told to this employee

It’s a little strange these days. I came across a job posting recently that was so heavily worded as seeking a BIPOC applicant that I actually had to ask if they were even hiring/considering white females. How could they even answer my question without being blatantly discriminating in any direction... it’s a weird thing to see. I think the right person for the job should always be the one who is hired regardless of their race, gender, etc. I do also think that many BIPOC applicants who are qualified could be at a disadvantage in experience due to past job discrimination, so in that sense it’s important to consider those applicants more closely. Anyway, that one job post was pretty shocking and did definitely come across discriminatory.

I am a WOC. I agree its reverse discrimination. Idk about other people but I want to earn all my jobs by being the best candidate.

It would kill me if someone assumed I got something because of being a WOC. Screw that.

like

Why do you care what other people assume? You know the value of your work and how hard you’ve worked to get there. I am a black male and have heard of other applicants not getting jobs simply because the company thinks they will be assume would be difficult to work with. Black people mostly haven’t received jobs based on thoughts like this and the fact that it’s been a club of letting in their white male buddies. It’s not reverse discrimination, it’s finally getting a fighting chance at the job you deserve.

It is wild to me, WILD, that people think that if we can just wake up one day, say, "know what? We're gonna judge all people equally!" that'll make it cool.
You can't generationally, systematically cripple minorities, then decide the race is now fair halfway through the running.

Some people just don't get it. And they never will.

The amount of white privilege seeping through this entire thread is disappointing, yet not surprising. This is exactly why this industry needs more BIPOC and BIPOC Women. I hope some of you will get it one day.

One of the best lines in this thread: “Losing a privilege/advantage is not discrimination.” Thank you.

Equality “feels” like oppression when it’s applied to those who have enjoyed privilege.

I’m a white lady. I’m struggling to find work. If I find out I’m being passed over for qualified POC - I think, well...the timing is shitty for me personally but FINALLY agencies are prioritizing diversity in action.

The pendulum has to swing in the opposite direction before it can rest in the middle.

Rolling my eyes heavily at the comments. I guess other people given an opportunity over a white male and/ or white female when they are just as good or even better suited for a role is now reversed racism. Or if it’s not white it isn’t right. Do you know how many POC’s are passed up daily & heavily for roles which they are just as qualified for, for a white M/F. But I guess it’s reverse oppression when the would isn’t being handed to you, as so many of you are use too. Give me a dame brake.

Internships, requiring degrees, pricey ad schools, and favoring elaborate side hustles are roundabout ways of ensuring your job candidates are all white.

i can tell y’all are against affirmative action lmao. so many white liberals in advertising screaming about they want equality now until it means giving up some of their own power and privilege LOL

“Reverse discrimination” is literally white privilege crying about being equal to any BIPOC person.

I understand the systemic racism inherent in the US. But regarding Sarah’s take here, at my agency we were literally told that hiring based on “qualifications” is racist. Clearly, much potential goes unrecognized, particularly in creative endeavors where you don’t necessarily need to go to ad school to come up with ideas.
That said, if someone was hired because they have the right background outside of qualifications , is that any different than white men getting hired for the same reason? That seems like equality to me in an f’ed up way. Take what you can get, and make the best of it. The world is imperfect on its best day.

I wish it were this simple.

No it’s not, it’s about giving visibility to candidates that would be ignored otherwise

Coming from Big Four, I have two offers to consider. One is for a small firm, manager role, $90k plus insurance covered. Would be pretty much on an island in my role. Other offer with Eide Bailly, lateral move, $77K, a little more than I would have made in previous position. Firm culture and structure, mentorship opportunities much better. Likely to be promoted up to $85K-$90K within a year. Is culture worth $16k? Any opinions from someone with Eide Bailly experience?
