This is keeping me up. Is it okay to ask the school principal if she can have her camera off when she signs on to observe my lesson. I have anxiety about being observed when teaching virtually especially at the time she was available to sign on. Just a very difficult group. Despite trying so hard to engage them, they don’t participate and are withdrawn from my lessons. I just don’t want be so conscientious of her facial expressions should something go awry. Worried that it will make it worse.

If your admin. wants to show her face then include her as part of the group, because the scholars are aware that she is present, too. Ask questions like “who can tell Ms. ——- about ——? Periodically advise Ms.——- with comments like: “okay Ms—— this part of the lesson is——“. Thus helps the scholars to feel more comfortable, also.

I like this. Reminds me of way back when my principal would walk in quietly and sit in the back during my sped math class. I’d always draw him in and I knew he hated math. It was funny.

I would encourage you to incorporate the principal into the lesson as a participant. The student would love to see her and I’m sure she would love to interact with the students. This would also help with your anxiety. Even in face to face classes, anytime I have a visitor, I try to get them involved.

You can change your view and just view yourself so that you don’t see her

Correct. I wasn’t sure what method you use - whether you share your screen with a PowerPoint, have a doc cam and go through practice problems or something different. That’s just another idea 💡 to help take attention off.

I’d include a rundown of the agenda in the chat and tell her to chime in whenever she’d like. Maybe if the kids see adults talking pleasantly to each other, at least a couple would feel comfortable enough to contribute. My team teacher and I get a lot of student buy in when we are enjoying the content and talking to each other about it. Just remember to smile a bit, it’s really not that serious in the long run.

Put it in a Google doc and then copy/paste into chat when she arrives. I always use post-it’s to remember these kinds of details ... and of course to have the tab open to easily do and redo it if need be

In your pre obs, I would just make this clear about the group. Identify target strategies you plan to use and leave questions for your principal about ways to engage them! I did this when I was observed hybrid asking about ways to engage my remote learners. This is our full first year doing this, so it’s normal if it won’t be perfect, and admin needs to understand that! Just use it as an opportunity for growth and development!

Also, you can explain that she may be less of a distraction for students if her camera is off.

You need to have individual activities for each I have a variety of word searches. Math puzzles book with pullouts. You have to keep them occupied so you can teach. You can also have buddies for the ones not so high.

I was observed by my administrator recently while on a virtual session. At first, my administrator did have her camera off but the student I was in a session with kept on waving. So I finally asked if he he noticed someone else on our call. Next my administrator introduced herself and explained that she was only observing me. Overall, my administrator respected me and my time with the student.
If you feel uncomfortable, just ask your administrator to turn off camera but students may notice.

Monday Morning rumination: unsolicited advise is criticism.

Much to reflect on with this topic. Last week I was told in a 1:1 with a new contact that I was “too direct”. After some time chewing on the conversation I was struggling to place the emotions I was feeling. Turns out I was feeling guilty and shame for being me, for taking up space. Lesson of the week: unsolicited advice is a criticism of you, a micro aggression of who you are, and being “too much”. What would you do??

After 18 years, I lost my art room to a classroom this year in order to spread out kids due to Covit19. They said we can’t hand out papers.. kinda thinking art is remote for all. I will do lessons on google classroom with live lesson to classrooms and home. I was told special area teachers may be “repurposed”. We will be used like a TA. One class will be spread out two rooms.Aday teacher in one room, I help in other room. B day teachers switch 😳😷☹️.. I know I’m lucky to have a job but.
