This is my first job as a manager. I’ve been managing a junior level employee and although he received warnings, he hasn’t improved. I need to let him go. I know his mom is sick and I feel terrible.

...also, if he is distracted by a sick mom, ask HR to talk to him about taking FMLA leave or taking advantage of the employee assistance program that provides social workers who can help the employee figure out a care plan for the mom or a few free therapy sessions. It might not work but you’ll feel like you tried

I’m sorry, I know it’s a hard thing to do. I’ve come to learn that the sooner the better, both for you and for him. Even though it’ll be tough, I think with time and guidance he can find some place better suited for him. Plus his coworkers will understand what’s expected of them. It’s tough to close a door on someone, but I try to do as much as I can to open another door for them, or at least help them see there are other doors. Best of luck!

I finally broke down and went back on HRT last week. I have been taking gabapentin for a nerve injury which I’ve learned helps hot flashes. I can’t tell a significant difference yet aside from maybe getting a little better sleep. I saw a new doctor (male) to get my prescription refilled and he seems to have a different philosophy than my last doctor (female).
