This is probably a dumb question, but has anyone ever negotiated a different office than the one listed for a posted role? I am geographically restricted (unable to move for family/personal reasons) but looking to move, and firms (with local offices) have postings in my practice area for other offices. I understand that these are because the posts are from where many of the practitioners for my practice group are, but I wanted to see if anyone was ever able to negotiate a different office.

Yes, it’s easier with transactional practices. If you’re applying on your own, reach out to the recruitment contact and ask if the group would be open to candidates sitting in your market. If you’re working with a recruiter, they can find out for you. Don’t start the process and ask midway or after offer. You wouldn’t want to waste everyone’s time and potentially burn a bridge should an opportunity open in your desired market later.

like

Agreed. If you start the process, they’ll likely assume you’re willing to relocate. Someone else asked about this recently and got a slew of similar advice.

like

I’ve seen it before but it’s rare. It might depend on how in demand your practice is.

like

You should let them know right off the bat, don’t waste your time .

I would say this is very hard to do, even with transcational practices. Partners that need the support and are hiring usually want you in the same office as them. I'm not saying it never happens, but as everyone else has said, ask before you apply to avoid burning bridges.

Yes you can be remote and work in a different juris., even if it's litigation. Look into remote postings, that's one way in.

It's not the majority of firms, but it's there. Some firms especially newer ones are even fully remote...

I did it but it was between 2 relatively close cities that were both big growing markets for the firm. They offered me position in city X and I asked about city Y and was then told they actually had a position available/opening up soon which kicked off negotiation.

Ask directly or work with a recruiter that can ask. I have no problem reaching out to recruiting managers or firm partners to see if they would be willing to consider a stellar candidate interested in the position but needing the base to be a different firm location.

It's probably easier now than it's been in the past. Also, firms like Husch Blackwell have a 100% remote option called The Link.

Are there any resources that people have used to help them figure out next steps? I 100% know I don’t want to stay in consulting and actually came in knowing I was going to leave after a few years but wasn’t 100% sure exactly what S&O role I wanted in industry. I think my team has been well aware I’m of this mentality because I never go above and beyond hence defn not getting promoted. Would love to learn about any resources that have helped define a career roadmap.

Notification fatigue is slowly killing me. The majority of my teams are all remote so all communication is via chat and all day long some channel is blowing up. On top of job anxiety, having numerous people tag you or alerting about something is draining. I think I’m about to have a breakdown 🫠

Normally, I wouldn’t have issues working in a restaurant, but I feel like in this setting it may be really disrespectful the chef.
And yes, I only want to eat at the sushi counter for a full omakase experience.

Additional Posts in Ask A Recruiter - Law

I have a videocon interview this week. BigLaw-to-BigLaw. I’m interested in the job, but don’t feel strongly about it. Obviously, I would look presentable no matter what. But do I wear a suit and tie??? I just feel so silly about it. And I’m imaging the hiring partner in t-shirt/jeans on the other side.
