Reduction at age 24 and first kid at age 33 (2nd kid at age 36). I could nurse a little bit for each but also supplemented with formula because I wanted to make sure they got enough. Your ability will in part depend on the specifics of your surgery. I recommend telling the maternity ward when you check in to deliver that you are interested in breast feeding and to get you set up with a lactation consultant ASAP. Assuming you are delivering in a hospital.
Rising Star
Find a lactation consultant separate from the hospital before you deliver. Contact her, let her know your concerns. And if possible, have her available to come visit you in the hospital or at home as soon as she can. Even if you did not have concerns about the effects of your reduction, I would recommend this. BFing was so, so hard for me to figure out, but I wasn’t prepared for that difficulty because the books I read really didn’t tell me that maybe Baby just won’t latch, maybe Baby just won’t be interested, whatever. They were all very, “Do XYZ, and just keep trying! It’ll work!” When I finally met with a consultant (ten days after birth), there was a ton of excellent advice she gave me and it helped immediately, but by then we’d already started feeding my son pumped milk from a bottle, so he just wasn’t interested in the boob. I think if I had met with her much sooner, I may have been able to really make it work.
I had a lumpectomy at 22 and gave birth at 35. The lactation consultant said depending on how the surgery was done I may have issues but I’ve been fine. I think my supply is slightly lower on that side, but any difference is very minor. Good luck!
Thanks moms! Hope it will workout for me.
