This isn’t that helpful unless you know what percentage of the relevant population group is vaccinated. If the cohort is 95% vaccinated and 74% of cases are among vaccinated people, that means the unvaccinated 5% of population is >5x as likely to get Covid. (But the math is little tricky at this point because anti-vaxxers are also not as keen on Covid testing.) But the broader research finding on Delta covid from UK/Israel seems to be that vaccines excel at preventing severe illness and death even if they don’t prevent all infections. This “decoupling” means we may be able to go back to quasi-normal despite outbreaks.

likehelpful

Isn’t the %s for someone unvaccinated who contracts covid to not experience severe symptoms/death in the 80 and 90% range?

Aside from what everyone is saying, aren’t 99.99% of deaths recently from unvaccinated people? It would make sense that more vaccinated people get infected. They’re more careless and go out since they know they have the vacuné. The infection rate doesn’t matter. It’s been shown those who are vaccinated fair so much better when they get infected, and that’s given that the most vulnerable are the ones who got vaccinated first

It’s because you antivaxxers allowed it to mutate 🥴

Nah just critical thinkers

Do yourself a favor (for your own mental health) and read this study. You’ll realize that 5 people were hospitalized and 0 died. Out of all of Ptown on July 4th. Bottom line: the vaccine works. Go get it and you can get back to normal.

Brutal. One of the most useful theorem in probability and statistics that very few people care to learn and understand.

This is somewhat of a "lies, damn lies and statistics" headline. Massachusetts has a high vaccination rate, as likely does the set of people in the outbreak. As such, there are relatively few unvaccinated people to infect as a %. Further, infection is one thing, but mortality is different; the hospitalization and death rates are still scant, so lack of vaccination effectiveness is not as big of a deal as it could be.

literally every country on earth, except Moron Johnson’s UK, has been extremely cautious and worried about delta for MONTHS. meanwhile the cdc, once again, inexplicably denied the dangers of this variant until it’s become rampant again smh

The Dutch unlocked then had to lockdown again. So it is not ‘every’ country. Additionally, most European countries are pretty lax now. Indoor dining and drinking are open. Yes the rules might say to we have to wear masks indoors but whilst you are eating and drinking you can, obviously, take the masks off. So restaurants and bars are much the same. Admittedly nightclubs make the UK an outlier but they have higher vaccinations they the rest of Europe.

All of this fear-mongering over a variant that is no more deadly, especially for the vaccinated. Good grief.

According to the same report: “The CDC also said the report is "insufficient" to draw conclusions about the effectiveness of the authorized vaccines against Covid, including the delta variant, during this outbreak.”

Insurance should not cover testing fees for unvaccinated (and even certain hospital bills should be uncovered). That will solve a lot of problems and we will see the vax rate jump up.

Yes but require testing for flights and major events. Which is where you would typically get the antivax crowd

Anyways, what are our other better options?

For what?

It’s the impact it ultimately has that the vaccine is reducing. Delta is worse and we’ll also likely have an impact from lambda and epsilon ahead of us.

Posterity will not be kind to the non vaccinated people who are risking the health of their family and communities.

Interesting how folks are focusing on mortality rate only….I’m Fully vaxed here and I definitely don’t want to be hospitalized for getting delta (as 5 were as per article). Would greatly prefer if we erred on the side of caution.

Chocking idea: What if the next variant is deadlier? Then maybe you want to be infected by the delta variant to boost your natural immunity.

here's my prediction. If Biden wins, the media will begin to message the following; -The worst COVID risks and outcomes are to people with identifiable risk factors such as obesity and diabetes. -Most other people who catch it will experience a bad flu. -Many other people who catch it won't even know they have it. -It's not commonly transmitted by touching objects and person to person transmittal is low risk except in close contact. The media will then message that we should; (cont'd)
