they are extremely different. granted, i lived in northern VA almost 8 years ago (i now live in NYC), but the entire lifestyle and vibe are different. also, being physically near the government laces everything with political undertones.
VA is the burbs. i’ve always felt like i’d consider moving back when it’s time to have a family because it’s a wonderful place to live, but certainly not before then.
you drive everywhere. things are more spread out. places close early. you have to plan further in advance. in nyc, you can get anything you want at any time. it’s not like that in DC/VA. not that that’s a “bad” thing… it’s just a lot different.
with all of that said, it truly is a wonderful place to be. but it is not at all like NYC.
Agreed on this, I should have mentioned it depends on where you’re at in life. NYC for me is only better when you’re still single and even then, depending on how often you go out you can get tired of hitting the same spots again. Kind of how a lot of Native New Yorkers who start partying in their high school days get tired of it/burnt out by the time they’re in the later half of their college years.

There’s not much there compared to NYC. I moved from northern VA (20 minutes from DC) to NYC this year and I would say NYC is way better. Yes, you get a smaller space for the price here but in Virginia/DC there’s only a handful of fun things to do. It definitely got boring after a while.
Coming from a native NYer who went to law school in DC and currently works out of a DC office, it really doesn’t compare. NY has so many more options in terms of food, hang out spots, late night spots, etc. Whereas DC can feel like it has limited options. I guess it’s what you make it but its just not the same.
I would definitely move to the DMV if I could work in IB there in my preferred industry. Like you alluded to COL and quality of life is better IMO. It still has a diverse demographic and a good restaurant/bar/club scene. Plus way more affordable/easier to buy a home, especially if you consider buying in Maryland. And this is coming from someone that has run the gamut of NYC (From Brooklyn to Queens to Uptown and Manhattan) and North NJ (Newark, Paterson, Jersey City, Hoboken and North Bergen)
Pro
IB it’s because those counties have pretty bad public schools. Howard county and Montgomery county in MD is $$$ for housing but they also have great school systems.
I’m from Northern Virginia and lived in DC for quite a few years. To me it really depends on where you’re looking to live! With the traffic, living IN DC vs in the burbs is an entirely different experience. Are you leaning towards burb life?
