This may offend some people but don’t you guys feel that all the women initiatives basically operating like bullshit in your firms? It’s like white girl clubs and sororities in college where they just provide platforms for white girls to be super extra at work. WOC here and want to make some changes but too junior and never felt that my voice got heard.

that sucks i'm sorry :/ ours is not sorority-like or extra. however, i often dislike our meetings bc i don't agree with a lot of the white attorneys' opinions that i find narrow minded, inconsistent with my own life experience, and sometimes even problematic. what helps is that we have a WOC group in addition to the broader womens initiative. the firm dedicates resources to pay for our events, and the hours are credited toward bonus. maybe you could pitch a new group for WOC instead of spending more time and emotional labor changing the white girls club bc that does sound exhausting

Yes… all of what you’ve said is true. I try to avoid a lot of D&I initiatives for this reason. I’m a WOC. My only concern is the retention and progression rates for POC . Everything else is PR for the firm and not my concern

White guy chiming in here, so please take this with a large grain of salt. I got to know a early 50-something female partner reasonably well, and the era she came up (90s) was a bit shocking. She had to wear dresses and tights. Partners were openly sleeping with their secretaries. It was like a lame version of Mad Men.

The point is that women of that era of law (mostly white) seem to carry some serious issues (e.g., internalized misogyny, burnout from working the “third shift” at home). Their behavior and outlook reflects that experience. I’m not saying it’s right or that they had it harder than a WOC in this era, just that there appear to be generational differences in play that amplify the socioeconomic and race differences.

No. Not at all. That’s on them.

Our I feel like is kind of is this but as a function of who participates. I find that minority women at my firm gravitate more toward the respective minority-focused groups than the woman-focused but aren’t necessarily ostracized from the larger group. It’s just when you’re short on time with the extras you go where serves you best.

like

A6, I didn’t say men should be excluded. I said women focused initiatives firms should be inclusive. That way WOC or those from less privileged backgrounds know these incentives are intersectional and they are welcome.

Our concerns are not the same and that is why OP and the WOC who have commented here are in agreement and that’s okay. That’s why these initiatives work for you and I’ll find what works for me.

like

Yup. It’s mostly well-intended white women elevating white women.

I am not familiar with this concept but I am fully invested in your description. I’m sorry it feels like it’s that way, and I just wanted to offer that your perception is probably right on point. Ugh.

Do you think it is time to find another job when your PIC is a micro manager, never trained you when you got hired, expects you to know things no one ever told you about in the first place, texts and calls you in the morning with questions you don’t have an answer to (I work evening shift so I’m mostly sleep when he reaches out), assumes the worst about everything, plots against you anyway, lies all the time, they don’t even do their job, they leave their trash behind etc. gives me anxiety.

Been for a company for over 2years. The executive team is very much a boy's club. There are a few women in management roles but zero ethnicity diversity there. I raised my concern to HR in feb. And they are just now deciding to do something about it. They want me (white female) to put together a diversity committee. Any suggestions on how to go about it? How to attract volunteers to the committee? I want to make sure I get the right people involved in this, to push for changes.

1. Something about your company/product

Junior goofed regarding deadlines (which I had to ask for twice); now partner is stressed, tho we should be able to lock in an extension. Jr took ownership of the slip up. I owned that I should have checked his work, but I feel that I hurt my rep. w partner. What to do? Lay low? Not a fan of throwing ppl under bus.
