This may sound crazy, but does anyone else not love summer break? I enjoy my work. It gives me purpose. Sure, we plan and do things over summer, but I find the constant pressure of finding constructive things to do day to day increases my anxiety. Give me two weeks like winter break and let’s get back to it 🤷‍♂️

I live for summer break, winter break, Thanksgiving etc. I give everything to help students understand important life's lessons in history and government. However, many don't appreciate. I find I am teaching to 1% or so who understand the complexity of the lessons history has to offer. While I enjoy what I do, I enjoy every moment I can spend with friends and family. I don't teach summer school.

likesmartfunny

Wholeheartedly agree. Some of the same people asking for better conditions for teachers will, in the same breath, say that teachers have to 'do it all' in order for students to be motivated and encouraged to learn (not saying that is your intent, Washington Elem 1, your comment just made me realize this for myself). It does not work both ways. In response to Washington Elem though, I believe students who don't care won't often learn unless they are very bright and literally soak up information. It takes effort to learn, but none to sit passively. However, I also teach HS which I know is a very different ballgame than elementary. Different experiences, I suppose.

I find that learning to relax and be is a lost art. We don’t always need to do. We need to learn to just exist and absorb and experience.

likeupliftingsmarthelpful

RIGHT. I could not agree more. Even the act of relaxing seems to be its' own form of activity now, with a focus on meditation for some and going through a number of steps just to unwind. Then, if you feel you aren't getting a relaxing result, you feel like a failure. Imagine that, a failure at relaxation. We just can't win these days.

Nope nope nope. I have been tending to my vegetable garden, working out, and watching t.v. I have no guilt for my laziness.

Yes! I life in PG. I’m trying to figure out what to do with my oldest daughter next year for school. PG gets out of school earlier than DC.

I agree that Summer vacation is the wrong length.

It should be 20 WEEKS !!!!!!!!

likefunnyuplifting

No. I need the 2 months to refresh and get to the point where I look forward to going back to school. The first month I do relax and watch my grandkids. Hopefully get a project done around the house. As much as I enjoy teaching the long break brings out my creativity again.

likesmart

No way! I love my summer! Movies, beach, pool, my flowers garden, going out with friends! And planning a trip overseas ! Priceless!!!!!

likeupliftinghelpful

I thought summer vacation was the whole point of being a teacher.

I get the "I need structure" thing (because I do too), but I also desperately need time to rejuvenate. To be honest, I usually use a day (or two) of my spring break to plan out my summer so that structure is set in place once it gets here. I plan my vacation, book flights/hotels, plan days for projects around my house, lunch dates with friends/family, "be lazy and do NOTHING but Netflix" days, PD trainings, decide what books I want to read, days to plan for the upcoming year, etc. It really helps. Value the time you're given. Teachers do a year worth of work in mere months. This time belongs to us and our wellbeing.

likesmarthelpful

Anytime!!

I need the structure of working. A week or two, okay. But this two and a half months? I flounder.

I find it hard at times, most people I would love to hang out work, I have no kids and my teacher friends have kids or grandkids .

Couldn’t survive without the break of summer! I give so much in the school year! I need this time for me! I feel so free with knowing I can dive in a project and don’t have somewhere to be!!!!

Haven’t read all the other comments. But you’re right, you sound crazy. Especially after this year. We’ve been out two weeks today, and I still feel numb from this past year. I’m happy for you that you feel that way, but give me my summer off.

likeupliftingfunny

Agree And Indeed!

like

Summer for me is all about family. I work and extend myself so much during the school year that summer is needed for myself and to dive into everything family related that we can possibly fit in. Sometimes it’s as simple as going to kids games and plays etc or going away for the weekend. This last weekend I spent basically the whole weekend with 2 of my 4 kids at my oldests baseball out of town tourney. We went to the games but outside of that was fun connecting with those two in a way that hadn’t been done in quite a while. Summer is definitely needed just the way it is in my family.

likeuplifting

This summer is different! I feel like I need 10 years to recuperate from the pandemic school year. 😂

like

Agree! 10000 times!

I need the training time especially now that they are free and virtual. There is a ton of professional development in the summer and I take as much of it as I can.

likesmart

I did a week of training right after school finished for the year. I learned more about how to run a CNC Mill (because we have one) and improved my TIG welding skills. I’d not be able to do that during the school year.

Not me. I find plenty to do! I love life, not just teaching. If I don’t have summers off I might as well do something that won’t get me sick so frequently and won’t demand so much of my off hours.
If you are bored over the summer and want to be in the teaching realm, you should teach summer enrichment or do professional development. Also, if you expand yourself outside of your career, you actually become an even more fabulous teacher because you are a more interesting person.

I love my summers. Being from Michigan we only really get 3 good months of nice warm weather. We live in a farming community so our students are usually on the family farms. I enjoy every second of sunlight, warm breezes, walks with my dog and horses and a chance to read a good book outside on the lawn swing. I like the break to connect with my own children (4, 7, 10). Day trips and go camping!!!!

I grew up in Northern Michigan. Beautiful summer weather. I agree that you don't want to waste it!

Somewhere along the way so far in my career, I had 2 children. They forced me to slow down and enjoy my summers. Before children, I would teach summer school, take 3 weeks in August, then back in the classroom. No more. I started to feel resentment and guilt, which was taking its toll on me mentally. Now, I just enjoy my own children all summer and worry about my students during the school year.

Great! Be mom during summer, be a teacher when you go back to school. I had amazing summers when my boy was little because unofficial I was the babysitter of my son’s friends! We spent time together and I have so many group pics !!! Priceless time!

I work in a high needs school, so I spend my summer worrying if my students are clean and fed. I like it for the first month, and then I’m kinda over it. It’s bittersweet.

How do you best support your students who do not speak English? I have four ELL’s in my 6th grade ELA class and they don’t receive push-in or pull-out Bilingual support during my class. Do you pull them for small group to provide instruction separately or do you just try to use google translate to translate your lessons and the work? Any best practices? I’d love some help.

My parent is sick with dementia. I can tolerate high level of stress when I'm called names, sent to h... etc.. but I keep everything inside. It's been that way for a long while now. I know I'm wrong and it's a disease, but I just couldn't help it... now.. the work time comes... I couldn't concentrate... tears just flowing from my eyes. Which I totally deserve. I'm glad I was working from home today. It got to the point that I just don't want to see that anymore... I just don't want to wake up. I just want to escape of my thoughts and my feelings...

Is it unethical as realtors working in an office to block chunks of time off for personal reasons? Some of my coworkers stay in their desks for up to 10 hours, but I've taken up the habit of blocking at least 1 hour daily for lunch, breaks, and other issues that may arise. Do you do this as well or do you prefer to work straight through your day?
