I always do b/c I like treating others as I hope they’d treat me. Sure, I’ve had countless recruiters ghost me, but there are also hundreds of fantastic ones out there who like us, are just trying to do the best they can at their jobs. This is also a business built on relationships, so I always try to nurture them—whether they lead anywhere or not.
Respond if you can. Just let them know you're not interested at this time. If the company is interesting to you, suggest that you connect on linkedin/send an invite. If not, let it lie with simple response.
I always reply. Who knows where they’ll end up when I’m looking again.

Respond. Someday you’re going to want to talk to that recruiter about a role they posted and you’re going to go to your LinkedIn messages to write them and you’ll notice that you never responded to them the last time around.
I always respond either way. Even when I’m not actively looking, if an opportunity comes up that seems interesting, I’ll chat with them. This recently landed me a new job with a 58% raise (for real, I start in a couple weeks). Usually it’s a polite “no thank you”, but it never hurts to at the very least acknowledge their message. It’s a great way to keep that communication open should your situation change!
I respond if they're in my industry, but there are plenty of recruiters that reach out for jobs completely unrelated to what I do
I almost always respond with a personal note rather than an autogenerated no. I’m always planting seeds. You never know if a recruiter at an agency you’d never work for will get a job somewhere great a year from now.
I always try to respond, especially when it’s for a role I’m interested in or at a company I’d love to check out down the line. I appreciate their hustle and hard work — wouldn’t you want to as well? Perspective.
Always
Always respond, and usually with a suggestion for the position if appropriate.
Pro
Respond. Always respond. Be nice. Leave a door open for the future .
Thank you all for the insight!
Respond and explain the job doesn’t appeal to you. Be courteous. And thank them for contacting you and that you hope they will as other openings come up. Be clear on what you’re looking for.
