This might be a stupid question, but can someone explain to me what insurance defense is and the work that it entails?

The basic way to describe it is you represent someone who has been sued. You’re retained by that person’s insurance carrier to represent them. Could be a car accident, could be a commercial issue, could be products liability. The majority is personal injury.

like

Agree with A1, I would add that “insurance defense” can be very broad. The fact is, most litigation is driven by insurance.

Auto insurance polices lead to personal injury litigation.

EPL policies lead to employment practices litigation.

D&O policies lead to corporate/commercial litigation

General commercial policies lead to construction, products liability, or any number of other types of litigation.

Public risk policies lead to constitutional litigation.

Then there is insurance coverage defense, which is a different thing entirely.

I have a question for my fellow PI paralegals in Texas. TPCIGA requires that we submit all medical bills through the clients insurance before proceeding further. The client in question has Aetna. Any help or guidance is appreciated.

Bought a car today. Finance Manager tried to get me to sign the Bill of Sale without reviewing the carfax report, despite it being mandated by the Motor Vehicle Dealers Act. She ultimately gave it to me after I insisted and contrary to her initial assurance, when I looked at it myself, the car had an open recall. Do I raise the concern with OMVIC (vehicle sales regulator) or am I just pissed off and should forget it?

Plaintiffs counsel took my clients deposition today. He mentioned that he would likely be ordering the transcripts and I suggested we split the cost of them (in front of court reporter). He got pretty defensive and said absolutely not, it’s unfair to the court reporter, and that it is frowned upon in the industry to do that. Each party orders (and pays for) their own copy. I’m in my 2nd year of practice, never heard such a thing. I’ve actually split the cost before! Curious for insight on this…
