The basic way to describe it is you represent someone who has been sued. You’re retained by that person’s insurance carrier to represent them. Could be a car accident, could be a commercial issue, could be products liability. The majority is personal injury.

Agree with A1, I would add that “insurance defense” can be very broad. The fact is, most litigation is driven by insurance.
Auto insurance polices lead to personal injury litigation.
EPL policies lead to employment practices litigation.
D&O policies lead to corporate/commercial litigation
General commercial policies lead to construction, products liability, or any number of other types of litigation.
Public risk policies lead to constitutional litigation.
Then there is insurance coverage defense, which is a different thing entirely.
