This morning I went to Small Claims Court against an attorney. He repeatedly yelled objection on the basis of leading the witness. I was completing my cross. The judge overruled the objection each time. Eventually the judge stopped and asked him, "Mr. ..., where did you attend law school?" šŸ˜¬ Afterwards he made snide remarks at me about how much time he cost my client in the court room. How do you deal with such unethical, pretentious, assholes like this all the time?!

The best revenge is living well. It's obvious your opponent is a putz. Ignore him. When he starts conflicts, defeat them thoroughly. When he loses the case, thank him for his time, politely asking when is going to pay, and when he doesn't, levy against his business account.

You eventually become numb to that kind of behavior. At least I did. Whenever someone starts mouthing off I think about other things like my grocery list, what could my dog be up to right now, etc.

Wait... your title says paralegal-- and you were cross examining? Where are you? What state allows this? I want to know all the things!

like

I'm in Ontario too! The lawyers here are absolutely psychos for the most part. I'm originally from Florida and the behaviour of counsel here is absolutely outrageous compared to what I've seen in my 10 plus year career in Florida. I've probably been to court 1500 times in Florida. Ontario, particularly the GTA, has some despicable lawyers

like

What state are you in? Iā€™m helping a friend with a small claims matter but itā€™s pretty clear that I cannot represent him. Obviously I can help on anything else though.

I donā€™t know what jurisdiction youā€™re in, but Iā€™ve never heard of an objection of ā€œleading the witnessā€ to work on cross by a witness the other side called. You could always channel your inner Miranda Priestly and calmly tell the judge: ā€œAn objection to leading on cross to a witness he calledā€¦I just donā€™t understandā€¦ā€

like

The paralegal is in Ontario. As someome who has practiced in the States and Ontario, I'll tell you "dirty pool" is just "pool" here and the conduct of lawyers in general is despicable

People who take this tactic (usually men in my experience) lack the expertise to handle matters civilly. When a judge is ruling against the jerk, I try to stay calm and possibly privately laugh. Obviously, the attorney is very threatened by you and you should take the obnoxious behavior as a huge compliment. He cost his client much more than your client (since you are billing at paralegal rates) -- or he wasted his own time if he was representing himself (I don't know about Canadian small claims representation rules). File the experience away in your memory as a huge victory against an asshole. That's where I have stored my unethical asshole memories!

Looking for practical advice on improving my attitude to work.

So imagine an imaginary scale where 0 is the worst piece of work a studio could produce and 10 is the best possible outcome.

As an animator working in an agency, I normally end up involved in projects towards the end, so by the time I get my hands on a project I can add between 1 and 3 depending on how much effort I put in.

If a project is a 3 when I get it, how do I summon the energy to make it a 6 that I could to make a 7 a 10?

Partners or whomever can help me understand about billing and hours. To keep things simple, letā€™s say you only have one staff to work 1,700 billable hours a year on a $60k salary and you have only one job that and the rate charged to the client is $300/hour and an projected hours budget of 1,700 hours. So ideally you would have revenue of $510k. If the staff takes less time partners make less money and if they take more time partners make more money while the staff keeps the same salary?

Some good news after almost 11 months of applying and interviews and lots of rejections finally got an offer! In NYC small firm, ex big law folks, no billable hours, niche practice area, appearance of forwarded thinking firm, remote till who knows when, emphasis on pro bono initiatives and building book of business. The catch salary. Was making around 140k at last firm with 1800 billable. Offer is 85k and revist to bump to around 100k in several months after review (plus discretionary bonus)
