A1 - We have accommodations for small segments of the population all over the place. We have tax deductions for all sorts of things, labeling laws to avoid people with relatively rare allergies from dying, etc. Some of the most important accommodations are just recognizing minorities as full members of society -- allowing them to participate on the same basis as everyone else. For the physically handicapped, that means ensuring all buildings are accessible. For the trans community, that means not putting them in an awkward situation every time they have to perform a natural bodily function in a dignified way. And it certainly doesn't mean calling them mentally ill. I'm not saying psychologists are always right -- they previously defined homosexuality as an illness -- but we're not going to take your word for it on what's a mental illness either. And more broadly, to the logic of "what if we spent the handicap ramp money on prothstetics," I would say that the people to make that trade off are the physically handicapped themselves rather than the majority of us who have no idea what it's like to live in a wheelchair or while blind.

Wow... I'll have to limit what I say because I could go on, but first: ACN1, if I didn't hear this kind of misinformed bigotry cloaked in pseudo-freedom/don't tread on me BS for myself on Facebook and other media, I would think you're trolling... Sadly, I don't think you are. You call "progressives" misguided, but how are you so sure you're right? Maybe you're mentally ill, what with your delusions of grandeur. If you want to get real, let's get real. Conservatives are latching onto this as the fight du jour and drawing a line in the sand because they are afraid and uncomfortable. Things are just changing too fast, and some of us have a hard time embracing change. I get it. But I'm pretty sure, change always wins. Let's look at some examples: North Korea? So far doing a good job at keeping their people in the dark... Sounds like paradise for you, ACN1. Cuba? Opening up. China? They've already embraced capitalism, even as they try to stifle social activism. I consider myself fairly conservative, but I'm also logical and pragmatic. Your saying being transgender is a mental disorder goes against actual science. Let's take another example: Would you rather a transgender woman used the women's restroom (likely without anyone even noticing), or would you rather a transgender man, ripped, with a beard and all, is forced to use the women's restroom because his birth certificate says he was born a girl? How does that even make sense? Does that help you sleep easier at night?

What about separate bathrooms for poo poo and pee pee?

ACN has gender neutral bathrooms. Proud of ACN! I have met several transgender people in the workplace, would never expect them to use any bathroom other than what they identify with. Also have butch lesbian friends who this is an issue for. I'm a straight petite woman, and I'm glad ACN, Target, and others are pushing this agenda.

like

Never mind the crushing debt, ISIS, millions of girls subject to female genital mutilation - let's worry about shitters. This affects such a minuscule portion of the population - one adult bathroom, one family bathroom - problem solved.

I'm proud of Deloitte's support for the transgender community. The trans community has the highest rate of suicide in the country (41 percent of trans people have attempted suicide according to a 2011 study). I'm glad that my firm isn't afraid to stand by a community in need. And really, why do you care who uses the bathroom next to you? If it makes someone else feel comfortable, then I'm fine peeing next to whomever

What's the point of have "women" and "men" bathrooms if people are not gonna follow those signs anyways? Might has well just say "bathroom"

like

Or maybe we call it a spade a spade and get these people help for their mental illnesses. Want to have a gender non-specific bathroom? Fine. But otherwise use the bathroom of your real gender.

like

I think people's hyperbolic responses to this have gotten out of hand. This is a very small accommodation to provide that means a great deal to the people impacted.

like

I simply feel like this is a petty issue. I vote let's just have "bathroom" so this can be over now

Some posts on this thread show exactly why it's an important issue, and I'm happy to see major firms support the trans community. This should be a non-issue in 2016. Being trans or gender fluid is not a mental illness. Being able to use the bathroom of your gender identity is a small accommodation. Diversity and inclusivity policies promote greater success in business and foster stronger teaming and collaboration. Kudos to Deloitte, EY, Apple, Accenture, Google and other major employers for taking a strong position on this issue. Before you pass judgement, I would encourage you to reach out to the D&I groups within your firm to learn more. Speak with and get to know a trans person and seek to understand the stigma and challenges they face before speaking out in ignorance on an issue you know next to nothing about.

like

These policies also basically came out of nowhere. The fact that Bruce Jenner doesn't want to chop off his dick and "transition" back to himself should tell you everything you need to know about this mental disorder. He needs help, not plastic surgery and hormone treatment.

I am honestly shocked at the amount of ignorance I'm reading on this thread. I'm not saying that with judgment or disdain; I haven't seen much bigotry or hate, thankfully. I highly suggest the cisgender people here try talking to an actual trans person--to try to understand why this law is, in fact, such a big deal to them--before stating your opposition to people using the facilities that align to their gender identity.

like

You consider moving every public facility to gender neutral a 'very small' accommodation? That decision impacts literally 100% of people. How is that small?

like

I don't think you understand what the contention is. The issue isn't about letting some perv who wants to pretend to be a woman use a female's bathroom so he can be a peeping tom. Get your facts right. No one is saying let the a 60 year old old fart go into any bathroom just because he wants to. But more so, let the 60 year old man who has transitioned into a woman finally be able to use the right fucking bathroom that she fucking deserves.

like

First of all, the fact you use the term "cisgender" is an absolute joke. This is the core issue with progressive politics, needing to slice out tiny social and legal fiefdoms for every minuscule subset of society to make them "feel valued." I frankly don't care about the bathrooms, but rather the fact progressives are forcing a radical social view on all of us dictating that we must cater to the self-esteem of every aggrieved minority. There is no difference between Bruce Jenner asking we call him Caitlyn and if Joe Smith asked for legal recognition of his 4 other identities John, Paul, George and Ringo. There is a way to treat these conditions with compassion, though counseling, without forcing society to comply with unsettled pseudo-scientific claims.

But what if people get their sex parts too close to each other or have to hear lady farts?!? Have you thought of that OP!?!?

like

So proud of Accenture for having gender neutral bathrooms. Deloitte OP, I don't think Deloitte has spoken for you as an employee, just for what it stands for as a firm. That doesn't mean your beliefs align though. But, good for Deloitte for speaking out publicly.

like

Relative to everything else that's going on in the world, this is so small. We've gotten to comfortable as a society and now we just bitch. Congrats America, you have become pathetic. Who cares who does what. As Long as it doesn't affect you then leave it alone. Personally if a trans women came into my bathroom, I don't care, the Taco Bell is still coming out one way or another. But if they start telling us to put the seat down, then I'll flip a shit

like

@ACN1 if by "catering to the self-esteem of every aggrieved minority" you mean fighting to reduce the high rate of anti-trans violence and the even higher rate of transgender suicides, then yeah that's exactly what we should be doing as a society. Sorry if saying that makes me a "progressive social radical."

I'm a girl and have occasionally used guys' bathrooms when the line for the girls' is too long, in addition to residential bathrooms at when hanging out with friends or family. 90+% of the time, the guys' bathrooms are always so much smellier and dirtier (?). Also I would definitely feel judged if a guy was in the stall next to me and I had to pee or even worse, 💩. I'm fine with trans people using whatever bathroom they need to use, but I don't think we should just call it open season on bathroom neutrality. + Y'all know there are creepy mofos who will be using the wrong bathroom on purpose

All national law should abide by the 80/20 rule. We dont write laws to solve for the corner cases in society. ESPECIALLY if it has any negative ramifications on the majority. As consultants y'all should know this.
