Who benefits from any person being listed as employees for any company? Let’s just list everyone as contractors in every field. I’m sure there’s some drawbacks - like no tax collection, no benefits, fewer worker protections, no worker comp, etc. But I heard working in a factory in the 1920s wasn’t so bad before any of those things existed

Every MBA candidate should be required to read The Jungle
Benefits drivers as they get benefits and taxes are higher to independent contractors as the company doesn’t have to pay payroll tax for them.
I’d also like to mention that I’m not on either side of the issue as I don’t know the specific grievances and role the government should play in a private company’s staffing model.
Uber is hardly the first to use independent contractors as quasi-staff to save on payroll tax, insurance, and benefits. Curious to see the impact this has on other industries like construction/small business general contractors.
Net pay is part of it. Lack of benefits, sick day pay, etc is another. Your feedback is anecdotal - when it’s used as a side gig for a few extra bucks I’m sure it’s fine for people. When it’s your livelihood and you have no safety net the risks become more real
There’s too big of a gap between low skill pay and CoL, especially in big cities. Desperate people will take whatever they can get even if it offers nothing in terms of job security and benefits. That’s not just Uber/Lyft it’s the entire gig economy and it needs to improve for the sake of people at the bottom trying to scrap by, not the hobbyists saving up for a new laptop

Interesting that you say the drivers you’ve spoken to say they like their situation. The majority of drivers I talk to have plenty of choice things to say about Uber and Lyft.
I think OP is trying to argue because they voted against it in California's referendum.
What they are unaware of (I assume) is all the tricks and threats Uber/Lyft made to get their drivers to vote against it.

The government mandated it because it's the government who would benefit.
Can companies are abusive to their people, Uber got people out of their. NYC cabs is a powerful political org
Pro
And a WAY better product for the consumer. If you forget NYC, it should be noted that uber has dramatically cut the amount of drunk driving arrests/deaths everywhere.
Cab drivers in most cities are also independent contractors and most people were Ok with that for many years. What changes with Uber?
In Pittsburgh for example, each driver pays $50-70 a day to rent the cab car and license and if they don’t make $50-70 a day they essentially worked for $0 or less.
You can tell an analyst is the one asking this question. Not thought through at all. Need to think about sample size and when you would ask the question as I feel you only ask this question with people you feel comfortable with.
