You’re correct, the home is ‘fine’, but is fine what anyone wishes to settle for when they are hosting friends and family during a magical time of year? Absolutely not.
Regardless of what it’s plugging - buying more stuff - it touched upon a cultural tension that made audiences feel seen. My mother, who lives pretty close to the breadline - wont go out and buy new furnishings to eradicate her house shame, but she LOVED how the brand acknowledged her emotions. That builds loyalty and affinity for when she will have the money to buy stuff.
While we have a responsibility as mass communicators to ensure we fight the good fight, the brief wasn’t to save the world. It was to sell more furniture. They did a damn good job at that.
