Those of you in NYC… currently with the outbreak, and no foreseeable end, what makes you stay?

This is my home. Friends in Florida ask if we’re moving back like we went on a vacation or something 5 years ago. This is where we feel the most at home (even though I’m from the Midwest and my husband is from Florida). Our careers have thrived in the city, despite the pandemic and we have loads of friends. After being gone for over a week over the holidays visiting both of our families, we were happy to come back to NYC. Also, there’s way more of a variety of things to do here than in most of the country. Also, I agree with the above comments that the city is as open as the rest of the country except for requiring masks and vax cards. Which doesn’t impact me since I’m vaxed.

I’m from the Midwest too, and hard agree—went back for a month at Xmas and … it was fine, family is good and all, but I nearly cried when I got back to NYC. It’s just not the same. I feel trapped at home and in NYC I feel free. What else is there but freedom? (Caveat if anyone doesn’t feel free in NYC, go! You should only stay if you like it)

I'm a city girl. The thought of living in a suburb gives me the hives. Having to drive everywhere is a nightmare for me. Public transit, restaurants from all over the world, entertainment, everything open 24/7. There's seriously no other place in America that ticks these boxes like NYC does. And, as an immigrant, NYC is the dream. Though, in the winter, I do wish I lived in Miami or San Diego. Anyway, most cities in the US are car centric and that's not something I want. I can't move out of the US without losing significant money because I work in tech (will probably retire in Europe). Also, we bought an apartment at the beginning of the pandemic. This fixed most of my complaints about the city (i.e. no washer/dryer). It could have been a bit bigger, but that was a bit of a lack of thought. But yeah, can't really leave without losing a bunch of money now even if there was a place to go that would be better, but there really isn't.

Convinced that the only people who comment on NYC restrictions don’t live here and get all their opinions from social media. NYC is as open as you want it to be right now, which for most of the city is effectively completely open. Still the best city in the country to live in, no contest.

Amen! America blows but NYC is the best you can do. It’s the only real CITY in the states imo. (Ie European style city.) LA is nice for what it is but it’s not a city, it’s a bunch of suburbs mashed together. NYC is the best city and imo the only City.

Because covid isn't just in NYC. You can say the same literally anywhere else in the world

I have a big house and great grocery stores in North Carolina… compelling…

It's not like the newest outbreak is even shutting down that many things. idc about the # of cases anymore

Haha well I’m down! I can’t go every day though 😂

NYC peaked a few days ago. Should get better.

likefunny

😉 Yes! Nice you looked it up. It would be nice to go out and get a meal. Hopefully warmer weather means less covid at least that has been the pattern.

The “outbreak” hasn’t affected my life in anyway besides for having to cancel some dates. Why would I uproot my life bc of that

Literally this haha

No where else to go. Parents live in suburbs, I don’t like it there. Most of my friends are across the country, NYC I have some family and friends and my job here. Just natural to be here.

like

Exactly same. Where else am I going to go? This is where most of my friends are, this is the place that most supports my lifestyle, this is the place that makes it most convenient to get to family, travel, etc. I’ve considered basically every other option and they all come up lacking.

The only thing that’s making me want to leave NYC is the uptick in crime rate on the subway. I always felt comfortable using subway day or night pre-pandemic. Now I am scared someone is going to attack me or push me into the rails. You hear so much of these cases recently

New York is generally for people who aren’t afraid of things

I just arrived. NY is great. Pretty cold though.

There are plenty of advertising bowls here by the way. Look for ‘advertising’ and ‘creatives’

Outbreak is everywhere in the country. Everything in NYC is open. This weekend I went out to dinner with friends (outdoors), went to a movie and 2 workout classes (with masks). So same things that drive people to live anywhere - friends, family, culture, access, food, network, nature (yes there are beaches, mountains and parks within an hour of nyc). I lived the first wave of the pandemic in the suburbs and it was extremely isolating and depressing being locked in with nothing around you.

Aside from putting on a mask once in a while, my life is effectively unaffected by covid. I go to the gym, eat indoors, go to Broadway, go to watch sports etc. Where else in the world can you do that??

No

If you think this is rough, you are not cut out for NYC.

This is such a recent-to-NY thing to say.

I love it here. Feels like I’m not always in the US, which is good for my mental health. Great food. Lots of creatives come here to build so there’s a decent amount of access to talent if you know where to look

like

Because I've been to a Broadway show, the Met opera, my favorite restaurants and pubs, and took an amazing walk through central park while it snowed last week. I've worn a mask as required and always shown proof of vax when necessary (I'm also boosted), which is absolutely no inconvenience to me, simply a necessity of the times. COVID is everywhere so directing this question specifically at NYC makes no sense. This is still the greatest city in my opinion.

likesmartfunny

I agree! Enjoy every minute…I miss it

like

1. It’s happening everywhere 2. This pandemic will end when people accept that it’ll never end

likesmart

Because NYC is awesome and covid is everywhere. I’d rather deal with it in NYC than one of the covid denial states for sure.

likesmartfunny

I don’t see the point in moving. The burbs gets you a bigger home, less noise pollution, but everything else is a downgrade.

likefunny

All valid points. Life with kids is easier in the burbs. No denying that.

Because NYC is the best city! And anywhere else would be torture

GREATEST CITY ON EARTH

If you're vaccinated and WFH, I don't see how this would have really impacted you in anyway. Besides having to stay in a bit more than usual. It's only those who work in the service industry or come in frequent contact with others who really would feel some sort of impact....and I guess those particular individuals who still refuse to get vaccinated because they believe in conspiracies and feel oppressed all of a sudden.
