I've been to both but I prefer female. I will say in my experience to actually get a decent therapist u have to go to one that doesn't take insurance. Costly but so worth it.
I personally seek out a female therapist. That said, I know other women who work with male therapists and find it fulfilling. Age matters less to me than years of experience and bedside manners to be honest, though I do prefer someone younger just because I find they are better able to identify with and respond to my specific issues. Older therapists I’ve worked with tend to adopt a motherly/pitying relationship with me.
I would prefer a female therapist but I got to the point where I just needed to see someone so I went with a guy. It’s been going well...until I just saw him on Bumble 😳
My therapist is female. I had a bit of a cap on the age because I’m young and queer and thought I’d feel uncomfortable talking about some things with someone who was my mom’s age. For me, the things I considered were (in order) female, level of education, type of therapy, then age.
This got more long winded then you probably wanted, but I think finding a good therapist is so important. Think of it like dating, you might not find the one on your first try, but know what qualities are important to you
Got an older female my mother's age lollllll. It didn't go unnoticed by my therapist.
Yes to a female, especially a WOC (specific issues). Don't care about age though.
My first therapist was a white dude but he was incredibly helpful. He specialized in certain issues though that I was going through and it took a long time for me to open up, but I made huge strides with him. When I moved here, my current therapist is only about 10 years older than me and also a woman. I feel a really great connection with her too, and it’s completely different. I would say it definitely depends on you, and what you’re looking for.
Definitely a female, preferably around my same age although I have gone to therapists much older than me in the past with good results. And second SC2’s insurance point
I’m so curious re: the therapists who don’t take insurance being better - what’s the reason for that?
Not sure what the reason is @D1, but I’ve experienced the same. I’ve been to 5 therapists (4 in-network, 1 out-of-network) and my out-of-network one has been able to give me the treatment I’ve needed (and it was something I communicated to every therapist). It might be because they are providing a direct service (no middleman) that is more expensive, therefore they feel more incentive to provide exceptional service. That’s not a generalization, I don’t doubt that there are in-network doctors that are great.
Also I believe if you have a mental illness and are diagnosed, an out-of-network provider is not obligated to disclose that to the insurance company. This can be a major factor when you take into account pre-existing conditions and potential discrimination by your insurance company for major illnesses.
Re: therapist out of network
Often they will offer a sliding scale. In addition, I made out of network claims to my insurance and once I’d met my deductible they sent me checks back. It’s not fun to pay full price at first, but if you’re diligent about sending in your claims you will get a substantial amount of that money back. Depending on your insurance of course
This is super helpful, thank you!
I think it depends what you’re going for. I did therapy for a few years and my therapist was a white male. But I went because I had acute claustrophobia/panic attacks after a bad car accident. He helped me learn a lot of techniques for dealing with it and after a few years it had mostly gone away, probably a combination of his help and the symptoms just fading over time. But if you’re going for issues related to your identity I could see how having someone similar to you would be helpful.
People who go to a therapist that doesn’t take insurance - do you just pay full sticker price? Look for sliding scale? I started googling non insurance hourly rates and 👀
I went to a therapist that didn’t take insurance and she had a flat rate per session that was (oof) pricey but well worth the money.
I don't care their gender, race, or orientation as long as they respect mine. I will do anything to avoid a Boomer though. A WOC therapist would be a godsend.
