Just join calls with video by yourself, peer pressure lol. If I was on the receiving side, I’d feel awkward for not being on video and would go on
Try to get people to join with video if you can. Honestly it isn’t great advice but it’s great to actually put a face to the name.
Following cuz in the same boat
I am on the east coast and joined a majority west coast team of ~ 15. The team is very tigh-knit but they have all been really nice and at no point have I felt the team wasn't been inclusive. We have two team-wide video calls twice weekly then outside of that people have their scheduled individual 1-on1's. You do have to be more proactive to develop the relationships than you would need to be in the office.
i got a job for the income not to make
friends. i’m stoked about the lack of video in my new remote role
Try having a video social-only call once a week. No work topics allowed.
I set up 1:1 calls with some people on my team to get to know them better, ask for suggestions how to be successful, etc. if I’m on video and it’s just 2 of us, the other person will usually turn on their camera too (except for Friday’s)
Our team each has a weekly 1-1 to touch points. We talk project overlap, careers, etc.
We also have a biweekly virtual happy hour. No work talk allowed.
Pro
Some video calls. The team has been communicating consistently. I have no complaints for now.
Use teams as much as possible. Send gifs. Just say hi. Check in. Chat a lot
Just joined a new company last week. Try put 20 minute get to know you lunches on your teammates’ calendars. I’ve found most people are friendly, but they don’t want to be initiators. Good luck!
I did one on one virtual coffees. No work talk.
