I was car-free in the city for 5yrs. Had been saving up for when we eventually decided to buy after I got married. Once COVID hit and we stopped traveling (both consultants), it became even more of a pain to bike w/ a full weeks-worth of groceries. Bought back in March and have zero regrets. Everything gets so much easier when you have your own wheels. I will say though that it's a mild hassle w.r.t. registration, parking, tickets, etc. It definitely feels like a privilege considering how long we went w/o one, but well worth it so far.

Very mild hassle as others mentioned, but definitely worth it. Got our car after covid took a toll on our local mobility, it opens up a lot of doors, and after covid we plan on doing lots of weekend roadtrips around the area. I bought a cheap used car that was in good condition for just over $13k and that was a great decision esp for Chicago, it’s not like anyone actually cares what kinda car you pull up in when you’re in a big city. It won’t bother you much if you get a little ding or scratch and it’s a small car so easy to park in the city. Coulda paid cash but decided to finance and keep the money in the market.

like

No regrets! We had been considering it for a few years and pulled the trigger when covid hit. It’s made groceries and errands so much easier and there’s less covid anxiety vs if we had to uber or take public transit. Definitely worth the mild hassle of insurance, parking, maintenance.

like

The only regret is not having a designated parking space. No real parking lot / spots to rent nearby, but since everyone is home much more street parking can be a huge hassle, especially after certain hours.

like

Very worth it. You don’t even realize it until you have it...choosing a gym that is further but nicer because you can now easily access it, grocery shopping options, driving to pick up dinner vs relying on delivery, or just running errands which conceptually was not feasible without a car. I didn’t have one for my first 5 years in the city and thought I was fine without it, but boy was it life changing even despite the minor inconveniences. That being said, my building did have designated parking - so can’t speak for a situation where I’d have to find street parking every time I go out /the whole dibs situation/etc.

I’ve had a car the entire time I’ve lived in Chicago (5 yrs now). There are definitely times when I felt like it wasn’t worth it (when I was traveling a lot), but when winters come around, I am always grateful. I also live a little bit north of the loop and have family in the suburbs so it’s definitely been worth it for me

Also have a car in Chicago and my only regret was not knowing how much this damn city taxes leases

Regret will be shaped by how well a car fits into what you want for your lifestyle. I have friends who regretted it. They generally lived in/near the loop, walked a lot, and enjoyed the convenience of living downtown. Then they got a car so they would have the freedom to get around to suburban areas or Costco more easily, and paid a ton for parking downtown. Then they decided to move away from the loop for cheaper/easier parking. This made their commutes to work or to see friends longer. Overall, the car made getting to the burbs or elsewhere 2-3x per month much easier, but it cost a lot of money for relatively little usage, and cost an hour per day in commute time (pre covid) for work, and generally decreased their enjoyment. If you have different priorities, living standards or kids, then a car will be a good choice. Cars sometimes generate their own usage opinion. Car expenses may force you to move to a less dense area, which means stores/friends/etc are harder to get to, so you have to drive to them, so you drive more and think the car was a good purchase when you notice how much you drive.

like

Yeah. I always thought I could hold out till kids (which is seeming like years down the road at this pt.) I figured the city offered job and dating opportunities that I would have trouble finding elsewhere. But years later and I still get the nagging “stranded” feeling. Starting to think the car might just be a bandaid or last ditch resort on city life that I might not cut out for after all lol. Thanks for the therapy session 🤣

like

Absolutely no regrets. Using public transport, Uber, and rental cars was far cheaper than owning (parking, maintenance and insurance).

Have a car right now living near the loop. I have a parking spot in my building. But actually selling the car next month. Really don’t use it except for groceries. Not worth paying 280 in parking & 300+ for insurance and registration

Help me out, everyone seems to be having much milder symptoms with Omicron. Is the hospital capacity issue due to people panicking and going to the hospital despite having mild symptoms or because staff are out with illness? I don’t understand how the medical system is on the brink of collapse right now. Maybe I have a skewed view of Omicron based on anecdotal experience?

What's your favorite BBQ / rib place in Boston? We've had amazing takeout from The Smoke Shop in the Seaport during Covid lockdown. The ribs are pure heaven and the chicken wings are also amazing.
