Why do you care about continuous coverage? This is auto insurance, not medical.
I drive friends' cars all the time. Even when we're in the car together. I enjoy driving, but just don't have a car. So I looked into some insurance options and most places have "non owned car insurance" for those who don't have a car, but still want to be insured when behind the wheel.
My understanding is that, in the case of an accident, the car's primary insurance coverage kicks in, and then yours becomes secondary. If the primary car insurance chooses to not cover you since you are not in their insurance plan, your insurance will kick in.
The policies are all the same as regular insurance. You can choose the types of overages you want. But the idea is that, since you don't own a car, you're probably not behind the wheel as regularly as others with car insurance, so your rate should be quite a bit lower.
Shop around, but I use Geico.
I had no idea. This is eye opening.
On another note, I use Zipcar a lot which includes insurance.
A lapse in your policy causes your rates to increase. A longer history of being insured also helps with rates too.
Haven't had a car for 9 years nor been insured. I've saved thousands on insurance. Even if my rate goes up some when I decide to get a car again it's not a big deal and everyone's rates go up over time anyways.
Thanks @PwC1, I had called geico and the woman seemed confused when I told her the situation :) I’ll try again and hopefully get some one more competent. Thanks for the detailed response
Yea. Dude. I didn’t know about this. Moved from NYC to ATL after 6 years of no car. My bare bones insurance is 220 dollars a month right now on a 30,000 dollar used car. Before I left for NY I think I was paying like 60 a month
I’d think about a cost benefit analysis on continuous converge before getting a new policy. Seems like the underwriting process should address any concerns regarding lack of coverage
It all depends on how long you plan to be without a car.. it probably doesn’t make sense if you’re think you won’t have a car for 5 years, in my casse it’s more like 12 mo
