Everyone on a big 4 call can afford a peloton. Yea they’re pricy, but you could def find that $ in a budget
Assuming you’re a professional. Everyone on the line is making 60k+ (or will be within a few years of starting in lcol areas) and could with a little budgeting if you wanted one afford the bike. You might have other financial issues. But you’re not so strapped that the idea of a pelaton purchased is offensive.
Do you guys want to see my new puppy?!
*this director*: wow must be nice to have all that money to get a puppy. Children in Africa are starving you know.

All — there’s a good chance those who agree with me on this are on the lower end of the pay scale. This is all a matter of knowing your audience… and the context of when and how it comes up. I didn’t include that in my original post, but that’s the core of my comment. Similarly, I don’t think a mid-level PM genuinely cares to hear details about their bosses EU family vacation when they haven’t gotten a raise in 3 years.
Be happy for them and aspire to be able to buy the very same things or even better in the future!

Isn’t it the same as mentioning going to the gym? Why does your mind go exactly to “the cost”? Also there are firms that largely pay for it.
Curious how people would think about this topic for say, wearing a Rolex on a videoconference (without mentioning it, but it’s visible if using hands to gesture).
I agree it is really annoying that the workout has to come with some amount of social flexing about working out.
I also tend to agree that people often forget how it feels to be starting out and have little spending cash. Be humble.

RSM1 - maybe take a step back and consider why you’re getting worked up about someone pointing out how talking about peloton/peloton rides can be interpreted by people with different backgrounds in group settings. Maybe in the settings you’ve seen it discussed, it really is fine and not exclusionary. But maybe in some settings, if you take a minute to look around, there might be a few individuals who you didn’t realize are uncomfortable, feel excluded, or can’t relate in really basic paradigmatic ways. Might be eye opening..
I absolutely love my peloton rides and workouts and have am happy to tell anyone. I find the classes addictive and I’ve done over 500 classes across cycling, strength training, boot camp, stretching and meditation since COVID started. The classes are the closest thing I’ve found to being at a live gym class. I do NOT have any peloton equipment. I have another bike I got from Craigslist, a set of adjustable weights and I pay $12.99 a month for the app, so the only thing I’m flexing are my muscles. So let me talk about something that makes me happy since I’m willing to hear about your nights out drinking, your kid’s birthday parties, first days at school and whatever else others want to talk about.
P.S. and in true consulting fashion, I actually pay zero for the app as my chase sapphire reserve card reimburses the $12.99/month up to $120/year toward Peloton, so the whole year will actually cost me ~$36.
If you pay for the app via an App Store, you need to update the payment/membership to go directly through Peloton 🙂
I'm from the midwest. Anytime somebody says I have something expensive I feel I have to make up how I got a good deal on it.

If you go down this rabbit hole people would have very little to say. Wouldn't this rule out anything that costs money

Fat people aren’t sensitive about thin people - it’s the other way around.
I’d rather hear about Peloton than the dumb reality shows people watch

When I was an associate, a partner sent an office-wide email out. He was flying his favorite tailor in from Singapore for a week and graciously invited all the men in the office (and women's husbands) to get fitted for a suit made by him. It would be a great opportunity for us to get a bespoke suit for only $1,500!
This was in 2014, when my associate salary was $49K.
Bro that’s actually a steal. Hopefully you got one!
I am reading this thread and I am honestly floored. I always looked at partners’/leadership’s lifestyle(s) as aspirational and the culmination of many years of hard work. I looked forward to eventually being able to afford the types of things they mentioned in casual conversation (second homes, private schools, cars, etc.). And the reason they spoke about these things was not to “wealth signal”, but rather to connect. Things they did on their weekends, stuff about their kids, etc. None of it was gauche or boastful…it just was. After all, they had been where I was once, and that inspired me that potentially I could be where they were eventually.
I would have a different feeling around these topics of conversation if I was, let’s say…a janitor. If I had an inability to eventually obtain an equivalent level of wealth and it was being talked about so casually while it remained painfully out of reach for me. But you all are on the same trajectory (as of right now) as these people…why not be happy for them and excited for your future prospects? Why consider what you don’t have when faced with what they do have? Why is it about you when they want to share pieces of their lives with the team?
The fact that talking about a piece of exercise equipment (that frankly anyone walking into a Big 4 firm can afford quite easily with the 0% APR financing at $35 per month) causes such angst…I mean, come on. Get a new hobby, guys.
I am all for empathy and compassion whilst leading, but let’s focus that in a more meaningful way. This feels frivolous. And if you’re offended by something so mundane, perhaps that’s something you need to reconcile within yourself.
I tried but failed. :(
It’s a Peleton. Literally $50 a month no interest. Most people who have jobs that require conference calls can afford that. Stop
D6 - that is true!
Hey yall, just had a great lift at Equinox. About to hop on my private jet to Turks & Caicos with your wife. See ya soon poor people!
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I will never again reference the length of a commute as it then implies that I own and pay for a car
Sigh....
Maybe stop mentioning your children? Babies cost more than a Peloton.
Couldn't* care less.
Cos if they could but aren't, that's a problem!
Screw you, MW. Just because enough people messed it up for a long enough time doesn’t mean we have to say it’s right. Isn’t that the whole problem with this country right now?

A peloton is cheaper than a gym membership- not exactly a flex. Do you get upset when people mention their homes, yards or vacations? All much more than a peloton. One day you’ll be where they are, but they aren’t “talking down” by saying they rode a bike. I know more people with pelotons than without at this point.

Every single topic can be offensive or hurtful to someone. Leta all just stay quiet then
Now THIS is a movement I can get behind!! Stop talking to me at work! 🤣
I don’t know what all you consultants folks do, but as someone in ADVERTISING I am here for understanding this Peloton phenomenon. I assure you OP that it’s not a flex on opulence and luxury but on finding a workout they like and a community that is compelling . Just like the conversation wouldn’t be “I watched some good TV last night,” the Peloton is about the instructors, the classes, the energy. Likely the people rolling their eyes are not offended but just bored by it all. Don’t project your feelings on them without asking. Let’s not shame people that are investing in their health and excited about it. Get a life and get over it.
This just proves people read what they want into things. Relax I’m not disparaging consultants. My point, isn’t anyone interested in replicating what Peloton has done for brands they work on? What they’ve accomplished is pretty remarkable.
Are any of the offended parties taking the conference call on their cell phone which costs about the same as a Peloton?
EY5 the point is not whether cell phones are a necessity or provided - the point is that if the price of a Peloton is comparable to that of a cell phone (which is debatable - my phone and plan cost more) that means a Peloton is not so out reach that anyone should decline to discuss it amongst educated professionals. You’re just nitpicking.
