Those who moved from the US to the U.K., what % decrease did you see in your pay, both gross and take home? Would be curious to get a sense of what to expect as I look to make the move.

If it’s about coming to the U.K. for ‘net take-home pay’, unless self-employed, then expect to be down 20-35%.

Accounting for purchasing power parity and healthcare it’s -10-15%. If you make the U.K. home then it’s net positive over time given US healthcare and retirement/termination policies

I'm a parent who moved with kids from US to UK.

A large factor in choosing our location (in the greater London area) was proximity to good schools (just as we would in the US, even if the process is different).

My children are in MUCH better schools now than they were in the US. The approach to education is different and it took us time to adjust, but on average, my kids seem to be about a year ahead. If we choose to return to the US, this could be a significant advantage.

Overall, my experience aligns with the 10-15% difference, which I consider an acceptable cost to live in a place where I enjoy the culture more.

I think for this to be helpful, you'd have to find people who stayed in roughly the same role.

I, for example, moved to London from US for a promotion, so my take home didn't change a whole lot. But when I go back to US, I expect my pay to go up substantially.

like

That’s a good call out, but yes, reference point should be a comparison against their realised or expected salary for the same role in the US

I lived in New York and moved to London in the same role with the same company. Salary in NY was $105K and my salary in London was £66K (both base, not including bonus). UK also contributed 15% to my 401K equivalent and I had more holiday.

More holiday days & lower COL >>> more pay

Move as a MBB consultant from US to UK and took about a 40% net hit

Ouch. But at MBB you could probably afford that cut and still live well

Lived in NYC and was making $135k (base comp, not incl bonus) and transferred to the same role in London and salary was about $99k USD.

Obviously a bit difficult having moved here about a month before everything shut down. But I will say the culture in the London office is quite better than NYC - much more value put on well-being and actually “turning off” at the end of your day or while on leave. I don’t plan on staying in London long term - as all my family is still in the States, but it’s been a great opportunity to experience something new, and I’ve met many wonderful people here.

I went the opposite way £80k - $180k (base) London to LA. The money is amazing as a single guy who lives in shared accommodation. That being said I also lived shared in London and I’m not fancy so in either city I could do what I wanted but here it’s just..more

For my friends here with family I can totally see how the difference is much lower, raising a family costs less, goods cost less and school is better in U.K. (although houses are smaller) lifestyle is also much better in U.K. due to holidays and WLB. I’d actually say quality of the work is higher in the U.K. despite the increased hours which is quite the paradox
